Taking Matthews off the #1 PP unit is just idiotic. Are they trying to piss him off and send him to Arizona? Matthews should of course be on the #1 unit and they should be getting 1:30-1:40 PP time, just like the Pens top players for most years.

Totally disagree. He's fine defensively. He does dislodge the puck in the d-zone.

it's pretty ridiculous that Kadri gets to play on the top PP unit while Matthews gets demoted

Matthews and Marner are their top 2 players.
They should be getting 70% of the pp time.

There is a rift between the coach Babcock and Matthews.

Babcock does not have the best players playing with Matthews.

No Hyman with Matthews. No Marleau a hall of famer with Matthews.

Matthews gets to play a small fast guy in Johnsson, and a guy still out of shape in Nylander.

Matthews no longer carries this team. That is a bit of a shock.

Watching this New Jersey game, it will become more and more obvious as we go forward.

Did not believe there was a rift but now I do. Babcock is like "I am going to show you something!" But leaves the door open for Matthews to prove him wrong.

I think Babcock will be proven right.

If you think otherwise, you're a punk! Who knows it all!! Hehe!

Matthews has been all but invisible this game.

My Auston Matthews thread that I made after the Islanders game a couple weeks back got locked. I simply stated the fact that the face of our franchise, a player with a potential 11-13million per year deal coming up and possible captaincy talk needs to play better to earn those accolades. Because even if he puts up a couple points here an there he is mostly invisible the majority of every game which just cannot be the case. There are hard working players that dont put up points but you see and hear them all game long as they fight for the puck, make plays...etc. Matthews had been coasting imo with the odd game he put up a couple useless points.

A good portion of responses to my thread indicated that the terrible loss to the Islanders resulted in a knee-jerk reaction thread. I'm sad the thread got locked for some reason because this is a legitimate conversation topic, especially after 35 odd threads about Nylanders contract. I LOVE the player Matthews can and should be because he has shown it in the past. But for a good chunk of the past 5 weeks he has disappeared except for small spurts whereas he should be all over the place creating and threatening. He has 4 goals since Dec 8th but worse than that he has been invisible and his minutes are showing it. I was hoping that Nashville game would be his return to the party type of game, now im hoping its Boston.

Matthews has been blessed with an amazing shot. That shot is enough to ensure he will be a point (plus) per game player for the next decade. However, I do not believe he is captain material, and I do not believe he is in the same category as Connor McDavid.

I've predicted Matthews will disappear in the playoffs - especially when other teams apply the body. Hope I'm wrong.

Tonight was meh but the Nasville game he was centimetres (one via post, one via offside) from a 2 goal game.

He hasn't looked himself, but I think we need to temper expectations a little if we are comparing this to the start of the season. Where he looked purely dominant because the league was still in loosey goosey mode and he was on pace for what, 164 goals or something?

His time and space were going to tighten up and his pace was obviously going to come way down. If he has more games like vs. Nashville then we know he's on the right track and the numbers will come back. More like tonight, not so much.

    invisible?

Matthews was all over the puck tonight, in every zone, on every shift.

Totally agree Matthews was to be the face of the Leafs the future was to revolve around him all the great play from JT and MM stole his spotlight. I like him (great talent) but know Babs and him don't care for each other. Remember the disagreement they had over the summer it as all over the Toronto news they said it was nothing but now I wonder

I get that we all enjoy stats watching and having Matthews put up 2 G 1 A every night is exciting as hell, and when Babcock makes decisions that we feel impede this is frustrating, but do we have to reference this "rift" every time the Tavares-Marner line produces and Matthews doesn't?

Isn't the whole point that you can shut out Matthews or Marner and Tavares, but usually not either? Don't forget, Matthews was literally fractions of an inch and a split second from lighting up the Predators in what could have been a 2-2 game just 48 hours ago.

and while Tavares and Marner got destroyed that game, no less.

and hey, Matthews still leads the team in goals per game and points per game, and he doesnot get to play with Tavares or Marner every shift.

I've come to the conclusion that Leafs fans don't actually watch the game because winning, and being one of the best teams in modern history, is fun and enjoyable. I frankly can't divine what half of your motivations are tbh.

Matthews needs to step it up, seems like it’s been a while since I’ve said WOW when watching him play.

    Reading this thread in painful.

This is simple. All of Matthews, Marner, Tavares are great and all in different ways. All players slump, even when they work hard. Have you seen Ovy's last 11 games or Laine since his 5 goal game? Crosby had a slow start.

McDavid is McDavid but they (EDM) have their own issues!

Things will settle over time. Nylander will eventually have a strong week. Tavares will go 3 games without a goal. Remember when Mitch had "only" 4 goals?

This is the most fun Leafs team in my long lifetime.

    Let's just enjoy

No, you won't see a "strong week" from Nylander, what ever that means

this season is a blow out for him, he is well out a synch with the rest of the team and the league and the way kappy is playing , welp he won't be playing wing with his gravy train much

Melander does not have the will or skill to recover from being out of synch and losing his gravy train center.

I was going to post this same thought. I find teams aren't giving him that extra half foot like before, and he's not one to deke through players. He likes to tuck the puck back before whipping it (the OT goal against the Sabres first comes to mind). Seems to be that teams are taking that away from him and/or getting their stick in the shooting lane which redirects the puck up into the mesh.
