BACKGROUND:
The other day, we had another volcanic eruption (GrÃmsvötn) here in Iceland. It may seem like recurring and everyday news to you now, in this Age of Natural Catastrophes (..and believe me - I have been to Japan, Thailand, Bali, Australia, New Zealand, Fiji, USA, Mexico, Costa Rica, Peru & Brazil the past 6,5 months and all these places have endured terrible scenarios due to Mother Nature which I have witnessed – crazy stuff), but this was a ---ummmhh--- special event. Because, out of the seething lava and the apocalyptic ash-clouds spewing out their poison from the distant caldera, came a streak of luminous light that noisily and abruptly landed on my doorsteps in Hvolsvöllur. I saw, through the clearing of dusty clouds, a familiar silhouette of an automobile. Why, wasn´t this the famous DeLorean from the trio of Back to the Future movies, I thought to myself?
Before I could ponder any longer - my suppositions were confirmed and out of the vehicle came a ruffled Marty McFly and his steady traveling companion The Doc. Their dog was nowhere to be seen.
Marty ran torwards me yelling "We did it, Doc, We did it!! We came back to the Future through interdimensional travel which allows changes of past events to occur without causing a paradox ending all life on Earth as we know it. It works, Great Scott, It works". In his hand he held a piece of crumbled paper which he handed me.
"I know you are a Big NYR fan, many times frustrated beyond the edge of the realms of sanity, with the teams´ performance and composition. And its´ awful drafting. But I have solved this! I have created a new Universe where all is possible. There are a few limitations it seems, one is that we can only travel back to all the drafts done in the 21st Century. Going back to the 20th Century most certainly would mean a paradox and BOOM, we would all be gone (The Doc shook his head in agreement). And we cannot press ourselves ahead in time. So we cannot see what happens with your players beyond today. Those are present our limitations..."
Marty went on and explained "Remember Biff and the scorebook from our 2nd movie that made him a trillionaire due to his success with sports betting? This is a bit like that, but then again not really. But here is the deal - you have one week to chose a new NYR team for this season and onward based on the draft picks I have made in my McFly universe dimension based on Doc´s calculations. I have also written some rules below and these must be followed without exception. In one week I will return and see your new NYR team and then invite you for a ride in my shiny car a into new dimension where this team will then appear – almost like magic. All other things should be the same for you. You will not notice a thing has changed in your life - other than the situation regarding the roster on your favorite team." (I did not like the look on The Doc´s face when Marty said this though...) We chatted a bit more (see my COMMENTS below) and then he hastily said -
"See you in a week he said...now we are off to solve the wishes of an extremely disgruntled Chicago Cubs Fan"...â€and by the way – you are the new GM of the New York Rangers starting June 1st . Get ready for some action, and don´t be a chicken! Also, be advised that Glen Sather has now semi-retired (actually he was “fired†when Donald Trump bought the team from Mr Dolan) becoming senior Advisor for the new franchise team in Sin City called The Las Vegas Jackpot, co-owned by the Dolan fraction, Donald Trump & The Reinsdorf Group in LA. This is actually a new team entirely comprised of our undefeated 2010-2011 Hartford Wolfpack team. We had a lot of great players in our farm system and it just became so evident they were too good to be true, so it was just inevitable that they just moved the whole team out West. And that was that. The Phoenix franchise was incidentally moved to Seattle this spring as well. And I happened to put a good word in for you with Mr Trump - so he gave you the GM job…â€
And into the car and off into a into a bright flash of light they zoomed. I stood in bewilderment with a long list of names in my hands... Here is what it read:

that were later dealt and what were their returns...Traded NYR players with NHL experience/potential and their returns
- Dominic Moore (474 NHL games) fetched us Adam Hall from Pittsburgh in 2006. Hall was thereafter dealt to Minnesota for Pascal Dupuis after half a season. Dupuis + our 2007 3rd rounder (NYR pick nr 78 - we could have chosen Nick Palmieri here at #79 ) were then traded for prospect Alex Bourret. Bourret was traded to Phoenix for a 3rd rounder in 2008 (Pittsburghs pick #90)- that is now our prospect defenceman Tomas Kundratek.
- Fedor Tyutin (516 NHL games) was traded in July 2008 for Nikolai Zherdev in Columbus - who played for the NYR for one year and was then not qualified/resigned and thereafter released for nothing
. - Garth Murray was traded in 2005 to Montreal for Marcel Hossa. Hossa played in New York until February 2008 when he was traded to Phoenix along with 1st round NYR pick Al Montoya for Fredrik Sjöström, Josh Gratton and David LeNeveu. Sjöström played one more season for New York, LeNeveu and Gratton never played a single game for the Rangers and were both released after the 2008 season.
- Marrek Zidlicky (521 NHL games) was traded in package for Mike Dunham who played 2 years in New York. He was thereafter not resigned.
- Ryan Hollweg (242 games) was traded to Toronto in July, 2008 for 5th round pick 2009 that was used to acquire goalie Chad Johnson from Pittsburgh - who is moste likely not going to be resigned.
- Petr Prucha (345 NHL games) + Nigel Dawes (210 NHL games) were both traded in 2009 to Phoenix for (a rental) in Derek Morris. Morris was not resigned after the 2008/2009 season.
- Al Montoya (1st round pick in 2004 with 26 NHL games) was traded to Phoenix in Feb 2008 for Frederick Sjöström. He played 1,5 seasons and was thereafter not resigned.
- Lauri Korpikoski (1st round pick in 2004 with 218 NHL games) was traded in July 2009 to Phoenix for Enver Lisin. Lisin played 57 games for NYR and was released without a return (ev to the KHL) - while Korpikoski makes steady progress in Phoenix .
- Dane Byers (6 games) was traded in November 2010 to Columbus for prospect forward Chad Kolarik. Kolarik remains in the NYR organisation (not resigned for 2011/2012 season)
- Tom Pyatt (122 NHL games) was traded to Montreal in the Gomez deal. One might say we got solid defensive prospect Pavel Valentenko - value-wise - for him.
- Bob Sanguinetti (1st round pick) was traded for Carolinas 2nd round pick (from Washington - #57 in 2011) + a 6th rounder in 2010 (NYR chose Jesper Fasth). Washingtons 2nd rounder in 2011 was traded along with New York Rangers 2nd round pick (#45) in 2011 and prospect Roman Horak (chosen by NYR in the 5th round 2009) to Calgary in May 2011 for their former 1st round pick defenceman Tim Erixon in 2009 (#23 overall) and their 5th round pick 2011 (not chosen yet - #134).
- Ethan Werek (2nd round pick 2009) - got us prospect Oscar Lindberg (2nd round pick in 2010) in a trade from Phoenix in May 2011.
- Future part-time NHLers Nate Guenin, Joey Crabb and Dylan Reese all did not receive contracts from The New York Rangers organisation
