Did they do anything to acknowledge Hynes in the building last night? I’m gonna guess no?

They did not. One of the beat writers said the team considered it but were concerned it would put Hynes in a bad spot if there was a bad reaction to it.

Probably the right thing to do. Let Hynes know the team wanted to but didn’t because they thought it would be in his best interest to not. Shows the team values their ex-employees without actually doing the tribute.

Lol Jesus Christ this place is toxic as f***. whining about an 18 year olds attitude which his attitude seems fine. He’s not sulking about how god awful this team has been from day one this year l. He’s confident. Has he complained his line mates are giant anchors and can’t score in wide open scoring chances he’s set them up to score on? No? Then there’s no issue.

I don't care at all about the numbers - I care about progression. I care about becoming a professional and taking the proper approach.

Up until last night I wrote off all possibly worries about Hughes - but something about last night's game, and his sloppy play (that got him benched) just led me to believe he wasn't following the Nico path of fundamentals coupled with steady forward progress and rounding out of his physical and mental game. Nico still makes mistakes, but you can see the confidence mounting.

What worries me about Hughes is that I'm afraid that he'll believe all of the folks telling him he's great - and like some posters on this board, point the finger at the team around him. Miles Wood is an example of rough materials that Jack Hughes could potentially turn into something great. Right now, Simmonds and Wood aren't what is holding Hughes back at all - and that should be terrifying to us all.

I love the talent, I love the cockiness, I love the familial support - but now I think there is definitely danger here of a Patrik Stefan type fail - and I wouldn't have said that earlier.

If this team continues as a nightmare sh*tshow - he could potentially have the excuse he needs to NOT fix his own problems.
Nico's rookie year was the year we made the playoffs, it was probably the most ideal year for any Devils rookie to come into, Hall was having an MVP season and Hynes still had the team's attention and there was positive vibes all around, but something from that year to the beginning of this year happen with Hynes and the team's commitment to his system and on top of that Hall situation refused to take a backseat. On top of that Nico was playing with 30-year old men at the age of 16.

I think down the road we're going to find out that the locker room the past couple years and especially this season was a lot more toxic than was let on.

So its hard to NOT point fingers at this team because it is a nightmare season.

The one thing the Devils should do I've said it before and I'll say again, fix the God damn blueline, do that and the forwards games get better and the team play gets better and the atmosphere in the locker room will be more upbeat and a place a young player can thrive in.

People seem to forget what Nico looked like his first year. Falling all over, weak on faceoffs, etc. It's an adjustment. Others said we botched the Nico pick blah blah, now look at Nico 3 years later. Turning into a STUD.

Having MVP Taylor Hall next to him helped him big time as well with his point totals that year. Hughes is playing with Simmonds and Zacha. I like Zacha with him, but take Simmonds off asap. They need someone else on that line(who is probably either in the minors, another team, draft etc). Would love Gusev, but looks like that won't happen.

Hughes will be fine, not worried, but he does have things to work on. You don't want a kid like that not confident though. Be humble, sure, but I'm glad he is still confident and not walking around with his head down based on his current point totals. This thing about his personality and all of that, you're going off sound and video clips etc, no one around here knows the kid personally.

Like someone else said, probably the first time he's facing adversity like this, which will be good in the long run.

The bigger issues though going forward; GM, coaching staff, more talent, goaltending, fixing the terrible defense
I'm just reading your post after writing my last one and basically were on the same page. Good stuff.

Uh..what? Only 18 yr old who could make wood and simmonds into 30 goal scorers is McDavid...that's a ridiculous thing to say.

Oh - I'm sorry - I thought he was our savior and #1OA pick - what a ridiculous leap to compare.

Listen - I'm not at all harping on the kid - he's been fine. Last night was crap though - and within a crap season - and for me it is less about accusing him of anything, and more about not using those around him as an excuse.

no one ever said he was on mcdavids level and virtually every reasonable person said he might not even be as good as kakko this season because of the jump and his size

The only thing terrifying is the amount of Devils fans turning on Jack and thinking that "attitude" is the reason he's struggling and not having a Moron on one wing and a Washed-up tough guy on the other. :whatever:

So Hughes said, per @Edmonton East (really, Hall4Hart?), "I think I'm always confident in my game" and all of a sudden he's a "overconfident little **** who keeps talking the same way"(@Fear the Wushu )?

First off, what makes anyone of you guys believe that he isn't working on his game in Practice?

What did you want him to say? I am not confident in my game. I am a loser and I should focus on having a Better attitude WHILE LOSING? Give me a break..

Would you all please get a grip? :shakehead

The sky is not falling and Jack will be fine just as soon as we get rid of the Coaching Staff we have and get a real one this offseason.

Many keep forgetting that this season is now one looong-azz glorified Practice with our young players being put in real-game situations to DEVELOP (Keyword here).
Literally not 1 single person said that. Try again. You are reading what you want to read and throwing in too much emotion.

If you'd take a breath and step back, what I said is pretty straightforward. Maybe this will help. If I have an employee who I promoted early, who then proceeded to try but struggled to fill the new role, then at year-end eval time was asked what he could improve upon....and he/she gave me Jack's answer and didn't list a single thing to work on or acknowledge it's been challenging, I wouldn't be pleased.

Also, you do realize I blamed the coaching staff a ton in my post as well, right?

he doesn't throw tantrums on the ice or bang his stick or complain to refs or anything like that - there's nothing to indicate he has a bad attitude or is too cocky for the nhl. he talks about wanting to play a full game and of course the defensive side is going to be harder for someone his size. that will come.

there's a big difference between being concerned about his performance and the leap being made to attack him now... does anyone have ANY evidence at all that he's not working as hard as he can?
He certainly hasn't been working hard backchecking or in the dzone. Source: Watch shift by shift over his last 10 games and decide for yourself.

Although his defense understandably sucked in the beginning of the season as well, he at least seemed to be putting in the effort.

These are just a few snippets of people who appear to think Jack has an attitude problem that is holding him back from getting better.

“But now after seeing the same type of arrogance/lack of self awareness in interviews during a season he is getting his butt kicked, I'm kinda annoyed by it”

“Not reserved - he seems like an overconfident little **** who keeps talking the same way despite the results not backing up the way he talks.”

“He needs major maturing. That hanging belt is a major ego trip, kid mentality, and insecurity. I am shocked his coaches never noticed that. Nas has to have a real talk with him, tuck the belt, make him part of the team, play for the team, and start working on his game (nervous passes, IQ, defense). He is not a star, neither he is on a high school team. He is in NHL. He is undeveloped. He is below almost the entire line up. He needs to be pulled back in on his ego, and realize where he is now, and where he needs to be. Someone needs to help him get there.”

Some of you just want to be miserable

Got that backwards. Want to STOP being miserable. Want our glimmer of hope to follow Nico's lead and grow up right. That's all...

Last night was fairly entertaining, btw - loved the Zacha sighting and we definitely had some snarl/pride which was good.

Yea, they told the team to get the lead and then lose it at some point to pay homage to Hynes, the Devils went above and beyond by doing it multiple times.

If Hughes was playing like most of us hoped, I wouldn’t be miserable despite the fact that the season has been disastrous. With Jack massively disappointing plus everything else going wrong, it’s just awful. There’s very little that isn’t depressing with this group.

This thread has certainly taken a turn.

Yeah I may just stop posting here and even reading it 'cause there's too many Hughes haters here (which is unbelievable).

"I want to stop being miserable", they say.

How about not take out your miserable-ness on an 18 year old who has his whole career ahead of him? o_Oo_Oo_O

Also, Hughes is NOT the Savior. I have no idea why certain people here actually believe that.

Hockey is NOT BASKETBALL (where ONE PLAYER can carry a team and can therefore be viewed as a Savior).

It's a TEAM SPORT (McDavid notwithstanding...but even HE needs his teammates to contribute).

Yep.

"Literally not 1 single person said that. Try again. You are reading what you want to read and throwing in too much emotion." So much for that, Hall4Hart.
