What's the expectation for Chabot's next contract?

As a point of comparison, Erik Karlsson won his first Norris in the last year of his entry-level deal, and signed for $6.5 million AAV right after, which at the time, was 10.8% of the salary cap (60 million).

I'd expect Chabot to be in the Norris conversation next year (and this year). Next season, the cap will be 82 million, so for 20/21, it'll likely be between 84-85 million.

10.8% of 84 million would be 9 million/season.

Is that the starting point?

Tough to argue when you break it down like that. I'm sure Eugene would have an aneurysm if he saw your post though.

IIRC, I think Karlsson signed right before he won the Norris (but obviously after he was nominated). It's a small point, but it certainly helps Chabot's case a little bit since he doesn't need to win a Norris for it to be comparable, just being in the conversation should be enough to get him close to that range.

Watch him play hardball and want his 11m x 8y deal right off his ELC.

He'll definitely be worth a massive 8 year deal because it will be the 8 years of his prime. EK was going to be 29 when his deal starts, TC will be 29 when his ends (give to take a year here or there perhaps :).

Completely different scenarios.

Probably in the 8 x 7.75 - 8.25 if done this summer. Higher if he repeats and isn’t signed. Ekblad got 7.5 AAV out of his ELC.

I'd argue EK is worth his on a cap team and that's more of an Ottawa Senators issue than a Karlsson one, but obviously yes getting the prime years is ideal.

I agree that someone will give him a nice long term deal, And he’ll deserve it. Better still, EK will get to choose where he wants to play next season and going forward if he wants to.

It was more just that while an 8 year deal for EK at this stage in his career would deserve some consideration, an 8 year deal at this stage in Chabot’s career is a no brainer.

I am not too worried about Chabot pulling a Nylander.

We managed to make it work with Karlsson so I expect we will be able to do the same here. Maybe not as great a deal as we got with Karl but I don't think it likely that we won't be able to keep Chabot.

UFA is where we get boned. I think a big part of why Nylander did what he did is because he was on the outside looking in with Matthews and Marner in Toronto. He probably wants to stay in Toronto but also doesn't want to have to make sacrifices so Tavares, Matthews and Marner can reap the benefits while he might not.

I guess that's why some have blamed Toronto for almost guaranteeing another lockout. We're not alone in not being able to deal with it if it becomes the standard.

I like to think you're right and we get it done, but if this guys puts up PPG this year and next, then it could get crazy. He's that one guy I could see pricing us out too quickly.

With a lockout looming I would try to lock Chabot up this coming summer for 8 years since max contract length will likely be shortened in the next CBA.

I would be all over that if he would consider it. That said, we havent given out a long term contract in over 4 years now, we'll have to see if its because we wont or cant.

If he keeps it up at this crazy pace, he's gonna get one of the biggest deals ever as an rfa, so if we could lock him in around 8x8, i'd do it.

Has anyone been deserving of a long term contract in the last 4 years other than EK.
