Logan Stanley is a 100% sure bust tho.
He’ll never be an impact player but will probably eek out a career due to his size, draft position and the fact he does so some things well. This is pretty common for where he was picked.

Stanley will not be a bust. He's a defensive dman. He's not expected to be a puck moving dman.
His defensive ability is his biggest liability. He’s not agile enough for todays NHL so he tends to back in and surrender easy zone entries to avoid being turnstiled. He has a big shot and is pretty good at getting it through traffic. He’s actually a pretty good passer, and if he can get his reads up to NHL speed he could be a good enough puck mover.

Overall he isn’t without talent, but also has some major flaws and should not have been a first round pick. I doubt he’ll be more than a journeyman NHL player. That isn’t really a bust for pick in the late teens, but there were better players available. Personally I wanted Cholowski at that spot.

well said. pick #18 (and lower, for the most part) historically has 20% (or less) chance of becoming a top 6F or top 4D since 1990. if he's a serviceable bottom pairing Dman, is that a bust relative to his draft position? I don't really think so. Perhaps it's a bust if people think every 1st round pick is supposed to become a great top 6F or top 2 pairing Dman

What does Atlanta have to do with this?
The 2011 draft position is the only connection to the old team.

And, you know, all the players that were still on the team from the year before. Hell, Byfuglien and Little are still on your team.

You don't get to wipe the slate clean just because the team moved to a new city and changed their name. It's still the same organization and those failures in Atlanta are part of it. Own up to it.

Stanley, Morrissey, and Roslovic are hardly home runs. Laine, Scheifele, Ehlers, Trouba are top 10 picks. They've done a better job than most I guess.
Too early to judge Stanley and Roslovic. Morrissey is a top pairing defenseman, on the jets shutdown pair. Maybe we’ll agree to disagree what constitutes a ‘home run’.

This is a fine way to think, but it also makes the fact that WPG hasn't drafted any "busts" even less impressive and less threadworthy.

In that definition there are 15-20 teams that also don't have any first round busts since 2011.
Will you identify these 15-20 teams?

Who has had the most 1st round busts?

Depends on where they were drafted. If you consistantly draft in the top 10 year after year, and most don't pan out, especially a top 3 pick here and there, then it's much different than drafting say in the bottom 10.

Ok I mean by that logic, Vegas hasn't drafted a bust with any of their picks in any round because they all still have a chance to be NHL players.

Yeah Vegas has had exactly 2 drafts. Its still way too early to call anyone a bust. Picks that arent trending well, maybe. But youre not a bust util you dontl ive up tp where you were drafted. Even with Winnipeg and Stanley, if he becomes a otugh bottom pairing guy who has a career, where they picked him is definitely not a bust

On the list the op posted, out of a list of nine players, you’ll find 4 (four) top ten picks; 7, 9, 9, 2 (lottery win).
Yeah, so half... which proves my point. A lot of the others that weren't top 10 picks wouldn't be in a redraft...

nope, 1st round has been good to the Oilers

Dubnyk, Cogliano, Eberle, Klefbom, Draisaitl, Nurse are fantastic picks (not including the #1s)

and we've had one "bust" since 2010 (Yakupov in 2012)

Ok I disagree with that.
New owners, new management, new city.
The owner didn’t control what happpened in Atlanta. Whoever started this thread was talking about the Wpg Jets which for the 2.0 version is the 2011-12 season and 2011 draft and forward.
Buff wasn’t drafted by the team in Atlanta so I don’t know why you are pointing at him.

The point of the thread is that starting in 2011 - 2016 the Jets added a really good to great player in the first round.
Stanley (2nd pick first round pick in 2016) and Vesalainen 2017 are still developing as most players need to.

Atlanta rushed their first round picks into NHL action and likely hurt the careers of those players. Burmistrov is a good example.
The Jets can’t undo what happened before they controllled the team.

Winnipeg made a decision to be patient and follow the draft and develop model. They sent Scheifele back to junior 2 straight years and made every player outside of Laine wait one or more years before bringing them up to the NHL.

Based on what I’ve seen written no other team during those same years had quite the same success as the Jets. Doesn’t mean that future picks won’t end up going the wrong way. Simply that in the years in question they did pretty good.

That’s all.

It feels like it is when they've drafted

Connor at 17
Vesalainen at 24
Roslovic at 25

Atlanta didn't draft him but they traded for him, and he's still on your team.

Lots of teams change owners and management. Should we then ignore all of their history too?

I didn’t say you should ignore the history and I’m glad Buff and Little are on the team. They are a few of the only good things we got from Atlanta.

Feel free to make an Atlanta / Winnipeg draft history thread encompassing their entire existence. That is not what the OP is talking about.

If Atlanta had been really successful it would be silly to claim that. For the same reason as a fan of the Jets I don’t concern myself with players or prospects that never made it to WPG.

Without the Thrashers there are no Jets 2.0 so I’m all onboard for appreciating that.

To put this into perspective, the Sabres only have one bust over the same period.

2011 - Joel Armia
2012 - Mikhail Grigorenko
2013 - Rasmus Ristolainen
2014 - Sam Reinhart
2015 - Jack Eichel
2016 - Alexander Nylander
2017 - Casey Mittelstadt
2018 - Rasmus Dahlin

And TO has two

2011 - Tyler Biggs
2012 - Morgan Rielly
2013 - Frederik Gauthier
2014 - William Nylander
2015 - Mitch Marner
2016 - Auston Matthews
2017 - Timothy Liljegren
2018 - Rasmus Sandin

Sooo....

Haha no thanks we dont give a shit about what Atlanta did any more. Even if some think we should.

Jets have drafted better than almost everyone, but Stanley was a rough pick so far. They dont bomb first rounders and have found a few late round gems which is all you can realistically ask of your scouting dept.

Hawks only have 1 bust since 2010 as well. Pretty impressive considering where they have picked.

2010 - K Hayes
2011 - McNeill(bust)/Danault
2012 - Teravainen
2013 - Hartman
2015 - Schmaltz
2017 - Jokiharju

New owner, new GM, new assistant GM, new NHL head coach, new NHL assistant coaches, new AHL head coach, new AHL assistant coaches, scouting staff doubled in size, new dedicated positions in the player development role. I’m not sure how you call it "the same organization".

Yep. The franchise sucked when they were Atlanta. Things began to change when they moved to Winnipeg.

Picks in the 7-9 range are still pretty close to a coin toss as to whether you get a really good player or not. At that point in the draft you are looking at ~20% bust, ~30% bottom6/bottom pair ~50% top6/top4.
Morrissey is a top pairing defenseman, on the jets shutdown pair. Maybe we’ll agree to disagree what constitutes a ‘home run’.
"Shutdown pair" is misleading. Morrissey/Trouba are the Jets top D pair, full stop. The Jets obviously also have Buff who could be a top pair D-man, but he’s used as a second pair PP specialist. Both Morrissey and Trouba out-produced him at 5v5 while drawing the oppositions top lines. Unless you are picking in the top 2-3, that’s a home run.
