I've been thinking about this recently, with all the concerns regarding the Leafs potential cap trouble and with all the comparisons made between these two groups. How far ahead of the Leafs are the Jets in their cup quests and how will both teams maintain these star studded groups without losing all quality depth players?
There are a number of similarities between the core groups and both should be serious contenders with at least five years of legitimate cup aspirations.
THIS IS NOT a "who's core is better" thread so for the love of god, lets not start a pissing match between the two fanbases. It would also be greatly appreciated if fans of other teams would keep their comments civil and constructive.
Again, this is not a comparison thread! It's just looking at both teams cores objectively and trying to gauge one: the likelihood of their success, and two: their ability to retain their cores over the long haul.
I wanted to elicit some responses and gather some opinions from the people on these boards.
For the purpose of this thread I'm going to work under the presupposition that Nylander will not be signed before Dec.01 of this year and will not be moved by management. And as such he would remain an unsigned RFA next summer leaving us with Matthews, Marner and Nylander as RFA's and Gardiner as a UFA. Winnipeg would enter the next off season with Laine, Trouba and Connor as RFA's and Myers as a UFA. This of course could change if any of the aforementioned players re-sign during the current season but for this exercise lets assume that they will all wait until next offseason. I am aware that both teams have other RFA's and UFA's to deal with next off season but as my time is short I've had to limit this analysis to a relatively small number of players.
You'll notice the Leafs line to the right of Byfuglien is empty. The reason for this is simple...we have no comparable!
