The Inevitable trade of Yannick Weber

This is incredible he's played 1 game all year. This isn't your stay at home ''in-the-nhl-because-i-can-fight-and-clear-bodies'' player.

He has skill and his somewhat of the same mold as Diaz in terms of what ''he's supposed to bring''.

It's rare to see a player of his skill set be tossed aside at such a young age. You would have to think he regrets maybe not staying in Europe. His career has been put on hold and that doesn't seem fair.

  • Does MB think by waiting closer to the deadline he'll get a nice return for a desperate team AND is he wrong to play this strategy given that he's put Weber's career on hold at a time when he should be playing a regular shift -either elsewhere or in Europe?
  • Is MB holding out because he thinks he'll get more for him by trying to package him with someone else on the team?
  • Is it possible that he still is part of the future and mgmt is just making wait him for his opportunity?

I just don't know where you place Weber. I like the defense. Weber coming in, doesn't really mean we are a better team.. We are a equal team if he replaces anyone (But Subban and Markov and Gorges)....

I dont think trading Weber is going to really help us because I don't think he has much value. He could be great in a package deal.

He's a good depth player to have right now... I dont even know if I can qualify him being a healthy scratch as wasted..

He's mainly a depth player right now, but if we were to trade him, I hope we can at least get a 3rd round pick

But does MB have the moral obligation to trade him?

Sure it's great for the team but it's not the way a team should be treating young players either.

It's not like he's playing 1 ever 3 games. He doesn't get anything.

GMs like having depth on D. Our blueline is great as is, probably one of the top performing D-corps in the league, both offensively and defensively. With Price backing em up, we really can't complain.

Weber isn't going anywhere, his value is pretty low, he's young, he's cheap, he doesn't complain and he can play. He's our 7th guy. I don't see why Bergevin would move him.

Kaberle is terrible, and he's eating a large chunk of our cap space. He is the one we should be talking about. He should be Hamilton/Czech league bound sooner rather than later.

I don't see a Weber trade, we need depth on D. Also, he's cheap. I hope we can move Kaberle in the Summer if not sooner.

It may be that...

A-MB expect us to have injuries on defense at SOME point
plus
B-he is hoping to be able to move Kaberle around the deadline so Weber becomes #7 who jumps in in case of injuries.

If MB was 100% convinced Kaberle wasn't tradeable then IMHO Weber would already be moved. That tells me somebody could gamble on Kaberle in the next month.

If i were Bergevin....i wouldn't call anybody to trade Weber. I would wait for the calls to come in!!

Everything is going well for the Habs right now.
They don't need to make any trade at all.

Unless.....someone calls you and offers you his best offensive player AND a draft pick for Erik Cole :handclap:

Don't worry...every DG's in the league knows that Weber and Kaberle are available and that Gionta is not an untouchable. They also knows that Habs got a ******** of draft picks and mayby too many center and some money to go around!!

Keep Weber until someone offers you something worth t look at
Bergevin don't need to trade Weber.

tough situation...

would be interesting to see how he's handling it at practices, you would hope that the coaching staff/organization is working hard to make sure he understands he's valued, that he hasn't been traded because of how much they value him as opposed to being just kept around as an insurance policy (whatever the truth may be).

until injuries come up, hard to see where/how you insert him in the lineup. Diaz is playing too well to be sat, unless Markov needs a break soon, hard to slot him in.

keep your chin up Weber, your time will come!

Unless there is a good offer on the table, don't actively try to trade Weber away. Keep him. Defensive depth is very, very useful.

Seeing how Ellerby went for a 5th I wouldn't expect much of a return for Weber, my guess is we keep him the rest of the year and trade him for a pick at the draft. At this point his value is worth more to us than it would be in a trade, just feel bad for the guy because he definitely has the talent to be a solid 3rd pairing defenseman/powerplay specialist right now but he's stuck in our pressbox.

Bergevin don't need to trade Weber.

No he doesn't need to but does he have the moral obligation?

He's basically taking a player in the prime of his career (early stages) and putting his development on HOLD.

It's one thing to play one game every three, it's completely a different scenario when he's going to play a prorated 4 games in a 82 game schedule.

Weber probably has a bit more value than Ellerby. He's had more NHL success plus can fill a key role on the PP. Ellerby was drafted to be a big shutdown d-man and he's struggled badly in that role in Florida.

I wish the guy well. I hope he has a career in Pro Hockey.

I do not see what team would need him. He was not the dragon slayer in the AHL, and is not good enough to be in a Habs top 6 D.

A team will really have to be hard up with NOTHING on their farm team to want Weber.

He has a good shot, but it isn't as good as MAB's.
Passes up to many opportunities to shoot, he needs it exactly in his hotspot, and cannot adjust otherwise.
He cannot make the first pass out of the zone,
Cannot carry the puck between the bluelines.
In the defensive end, he is out positioned and without question out muscled.

What team is so hard up with a barren farm team that they need him?

He's got a great shot. precise and powerful. If my memory serves me correct, a good snap too.

Or maybe he's not interesting in hitting shins and creating turnovers?

He cannot make the first pass out of the zone,

Yes he can.

Cannot carry the puck between the bluelines.

Yes he can.

Not sure about the out positioned part but yes, sadly out muscled is his biggest weak point.

What team is so hard up with a barren farm team that they need him?

A team with a struggling powerplay that needs a shooter and decent passer?

Sending Kaberle to Hamilton or the Czech league doesn't stop him 'eating a large chunk of our cap space'.

It's not about what you have on the farm team, some players are not yet NHL ready like us with Tinordi Ellis and Beaulieu.

Plus a team may have a big stay at home guy but have a need on the PP and a PMD. It's oversimplifying things to do a "good" vs "not good" analysis. weber is a poor fit here because he is too similar to what we have but may be a perfect fit as #5-6 elswhere if they need more mobility and PP help back there.

Plus he's not around if a couple guys go down or another team wants him. We don't need the cap room and he isn't a distraction so may as well have him with the team.

Weber sure has a price tag on him. But I'm not too convinced MB is shopping him, yet. I think MB is trying to get rid of Kaberle's contract (something ala Cole) and keep Weber as a 7th. I'm sure MB would trade Weber if the return satisfied him. But with out strong defense and how much we're relying on it, having Weber as a 7th is luxury.

Ellerby was at least playing. Hard to pin a value on Weber when he hasn't played more than a game this year. I'd be shocked if he got us back anything higher than a 5th.

You are a fan. I get it.

But this guy is not an NHL pp shooter. How many coaches and GM's need to keep him on the sidelines to prove that to you?

I'm not a Weber fanboy.

And yes Weber lacks the muscle you want on D but he can still find a job in the NHL with limited minutes and you are wrong in saying that he can't produce with his shot on the PP.

He has proven to 3 coaches and three GM's that he is not NHL prime time.

Yes he is a poor fit here, especially since he could not seize his opportunity and the Habs take a chance, import Diaz who has NO north american experience, who never was drafted by ANY NHL team and that player passes Weber in the depth chart.

There was a spot for Weber. It was his, he did not rise to the occasion when he had the chance, someone else stepped in, and now that window has closed.

Two D's would have to get injured before he gets another sniff at the Habs roster.

He has a shot from the point, but only when it is perfect, or he just passes it back. There are guys like that on every roster, and every farm team.
