Toews used to be a very good player in his prime but the whole "tougher mins" thing doesn't fly considering even in Toews prime Kane was still the majority of the time better.

You're right, playing the other teams best players every night and focusing on shutting them down as opposed to waiting for a pass from your own zone while you sit on the red line doesn't mean a thing. Put Kane in Toews role and we'll see how much he produces.

Maybe if they weren't paying a low end 1C 10.5 million, they could spend money elsewhere. Like defense.


Toews isn't the reason on the ice why they're bad. But he is the reason why they traded Panarin and don't have cap space for Defense.

Paying a 6 million player, 10.5 million is recipe for disaster.


Also, paying Seabrook 6 mil is horrendous.

Overpaying your best players isn't great, but it's never what burns teams. And if you think Toews is a 6 million dollar player, you haven't been paying attention to recent contracts. He's worth at least 8. 2.5 million doesn't cripple a team.

If you put Toews in Kane's role... Well we have seen he struggled to get to 50 points the last few years...couldn't get to 60.

Putting Toews with the 3rd and 4th liners Kane had to play with would not be pretty for Toews.

Kane with Hossa/Sharp would be dynamic

Ryan Johansen and Logan Couture just signed UFA deals for 8. Kopitar signed for 10. Seguin for 9.85. Tavares for 11. Toews is still a number one center. He's worth around 8.

And the other team would outscore that line on a regualar basis because Kane can't play defense. Kane would also have to PK, and win the majority of his faceoffs he takes, yeah, good luck with that.

Their top-1, top-3, top-5, whatever group you classify at as their “top players”...is mediocre at best compared to the rest of the NHL and their depth is awful. None of this is particularly shocking.
