The Good:

- WINNING!
- Anderson was first star. Great game. Great tribute for his 300th.
- Tuch's ENG by outracing some ex-Sabre.
- Krebs early goal was a beauty. Hino's pass was dynamite.
- Teams that don't like each other? So much fun.
- Fights!
- VO RIPS one and places it perfectly.
- Samuelsson noticeable, especially playing on the right after Fitz went out.
- PKing is life.
- Signs of life from the fans:
ad08e2a0-a0dd-11ec-bcbb-c18b297763d2

The Bad:

- Asplund getting hurt after having a great defensive first period.
- Fitz getting hurt, potentially by Kolesar's douchery.

The Ugly:

- Officiating. Seemed like they really wanted to have the narrative be Jack coming back to Buffalo and winning.

====

Paxon - Mar 10, 2022 at 9:45 PM

The crowd was awesome

So sad that NHL’s fairy tale of Jack’s return was a nightmare instead. f*** this league and their bullshit officiating.

My Cozen Dylan - Mar 10, 2022 at 9:47 PM

My first home game in 4 1/2 years. Amazing all around.

Tuch and Krebs both scoring was perfect. Won the trade.

====

Chainshot - Mar 10, 2022 at 9:47 PM

Here you go Jack -

====

debaser66 - Mar 10, 2022 at 9:48 PM

Poetic justice night!

====

The Blunder Years - Mar 10, 2022 at 9:48 PM

Did we break the curse?!?!

Just smothered our former “savior”… the player we DESTROYED our franchise for. For the first time in awhile It legitimately feels like we are on an upswing. Our team is gelling, the players who should be scoring are, and we have so much talent in the pipeline.

====

5 Minute Major - Mar 10, 2022 at 9:49 PM

The Good: Jack coughing up the puck and our new leader salting the game away. It was poetic.

====

milwaukee - Mar 10, 2022 at 9:50 PM

You love to see it.

TheMistyStranger - Mar 10, 2022 at 9:51 PM

To piggy back on this: the guys with the expiring contracts heading into UFA are NOT key players of this team, and will almost certainly be replaced by young bluechippers.

Might as well have this thread live too.

Once again, Eichel leaves Key Bank Arena after losing a game.

Just like the last six years.

Should be used to it by now.

====

tsujimoto74 - Mar 10, 2022 at 9:54 PM

Missed this one (will definitely go back and watch later), but watched the highlights.
Tuch out-muscling Eichel for the puck en route to getting the empty netter to seal it was just *chef's kiss*

====

sabremike - Mar 10, 2022 at 9:55 PM

I think I speak for all the men on this board tonight:

====

Chainshot - Mar 10, 2022 at 9:55 PM

The crowd was awesome

Not only that, they gave them something good. This fanbase will come back, just play like they care.

====

Definitely some cathartic exorcising of demons tonight. Felt good man.

====

ISeeStars - Mar 10, 2022 at 9:57 PM

The only thing this game missed was the Eichel stick smash against the goalpost after chasing Tuch for the finisher.

MarkusKetterer - Mar 10, 2022 at 9:59 PM

G:
- Krebs and Tuch scoring
- Victor’s snipe
- one actual fight and one hugathon
- #300 for Anderson
- my stream finally stopped being choppy

B:
- one sided officiating

U:
- Kolesar’s cheap shots

====

Chainshot - Mar 10, 2022 at 10:00 PM

Find someone in life you celebrates what you do the way Alex Tuch celebrates what his teammates do.

====

joshjull - Mar 10, 2022 at 10:01 PM

Jack is being a complete baby in the post game presser.

====

Jacob582 - Mar 10, 2022 at 10:03 PM

Good
Three stars: Krebs, Tuch and Anderson (300 wins!)

The ESPN broadcast was top shelf. They had great cameras. Showed parts of the game we don't see on MSG. Superior microphones - heard lots of crowd noise and even player communication.

Dahlin wearing the A

ENG

Team staying on the ice to celebrate with Andy.

Bad
Me wanting Cozens to block that shot with his face

Ugly
Refs
Kolesar

====

joshjull - Mar 10, 2022 at 10:03 PM

He is the bitch many thought he was.

====

ValJamesDuex - Mar 10, 2022 at 10:05 PM

G
Hockey was back in Buffalo tonight. I could smell the sweat from here. Bottle it and keep it going!

300 for Anderson!

simple formula...
Get this F'in crowd back into the dump every night
Play hard ALL night!
Stay on plan KA and keep Pegs from interfering

The Crowd! Not had energy like that in two years

Fitz's courage taking on 40 extra pounds, Hayden for playing hard

B
F off to the national media that came to town for this one and tried to promote a narrative
Trying to stay positive, but not liking Mitts right now, he may need a change
Loosing Asplund and Fitz
3 cheap shot punches to Fitz's head

U
Refs were plainly trying to give Vegas playoff help until they couldn't anymore

====

ISeeStars - Mar 10, 2022 at 10:06 PM

Hahahaha, Eichel showing everyone exactly why he is no longer the captain of this team.

I think he could've got a fair amount of fans to cool off the hate by acting mature through the process and interviews but he went ahead and torched that idea to the ground today. He is now among the most disliked athletes in Buffalo with those immature comments.

This couldn’t have gone better.

Krebs scoring. Tuch getting the puck from Jack and sealing it. Jack’s comments after the game.

It’s perfect.

There was a lot of people torn on all of this. And with good reasons.

But not anymore. He’s the bad guy. The new good guys rose to the occasion and made him show his true face.

buffalowing88 - Mar 10, 2022 at 11:26 PM

So sad that NHL’s fairy tale of Jack’s return was a nightmare instead. f*** this league and their bullshit officiating.

Which calls were bullshit? I didn't think it was that bad after the first, tbh. Krebs second penalty in particular seemed pretty blatant to me. I hate when we blame refs as if they actually get together and say, "Hey, screw these fans, lets make sure to throw a game in an age when people have 2389 camera angles and there are 293 talking heads and countless posters scrutinizing everything we do."

That's some real conspiracy theory stuff.

====

Chainshot - Mar 10, 2022 at 11:27 PM

Pretty much, you have to do a ton to get back into Buffalo fan's good graces after burning that bridge. Hasek being one of the few I can think of.

Interesting to think that the talent of Hasek, who did everything in his power to help them win and was ultimately let down by the inaction of the GM/ownership vs. Jack's time where he clearly did not do everything in his power to win in his time in Buffalo and yet still decided he'd had enough without actually doing enough to merit the consideration. Again, it speaks to the character of the individuals as people. One is a high-character league MVP, the other is an entitled punk.

Eichel letting his true colours shine during the post game presser. It doesn't mean he isn't a good hockey player or that he didn't do positive things in the community while he played for Buffalo, however the addition by subtraction concept seems to be a fair assessment of his departure. Tuch and Krebs are the icing on that cake.

Hinostroza was tackled entering the Vegas zone immediately before they made that call on Krebs. That's probably where most of Krebs' upset at that comes from. Then later, they missed a clear slash on Skinner at center ice after having place three Sabres in the box for similar things. Add in the lack of instigator on the Fitz fight, plus letting the bush league stuff go at the end of it... it gets old.

G: Spending $38 on a 300 level seat, but sitting in the 3rd row of the 100's.

Skinner, Tuch, Thompson immediately going over to the penalty box to give props to Hayden and Fitz after their fights.

This is the loudest and most energy I can remember in this arena in at least a decade(ugly? lol).

Fans were HEATED after that no call hook in the o-zone lead to a turn over which led to Krebs got called for hooking in the d-zone breaking up the play. Okposo laid into the refs for this.

Skinner got slashed hard on the hands and got super pissed and let the refs have it, slapped his stick into the boards from the bench a few times. No call of course.

It was so much fun to actually go to a real hockey game again.

Not gonna repeat what others have said.

The Jack tribute video got mega MEGA booed until it switched to showing him at Roswell. Then he got a standing ovation.

If he continues to refine his game and add even more edge (he has the size to be a monster) we are looking at our version of Erik Cernak in Tampa. His team got dummied tonight and he comes off as a whiny loser. Love to see it.

Eichel has been Mr. Invisible since arriving in Vegas and the Golden Knights are in real danger of missing the playoffs. Maybe focus more on winning games and less on Sabres fans there, Jack.

I hope Tuch and Krebs are great players for you guys for years to come while Eichel and the Golden Knights fade away.

I think Rasmus will end up getting "A" permanently in the near future.

====

WoahBoy - Mar 11, 2022 at 8:27 AM

To skirt the Eichel narrative for a moment, I want to give major props to Anderson for his 300th. Not a super difficult but by no means easy victory to accomplish the task. Maybe it helped that the spotlight wasn’t solely on him.
And man, what a backhand deflector by Krebs and arguably the “best ENG” I’ve ever seen by Tuch!
Probably the highlight game I’ll reflect upon all season. I regret not seeing it in person. I’ll be in town tonight to do some curling this weekend :)

I've been back and forth on Eichel the leader (and person) since well before the trade. Moving on was always the right choice given the circumstances, but I wasn't sure where I stood on Eichel himself.

That 30-second clip has validated for me the notion that Jack is a total loser.

I'll miss the skill. That's it.

I'll otherwise hope to never think about his loser era ever again.

Go Sabres.

I thought Eichel would be happier when he went to a good team with more leadership.

That clip shows the same attitude we had a problem with when he was here and talked to media after the game.

He doesn't have the emmotional maturity to handle the loss/rejection and not let it show in post-game press conferences.

Indeed. Also showed a lot of team character to give Anderson the collective stick-taps as they were running the video tribute for him after the game. They are very much more of a team than they were before. It may not all be Jack, but as I've mentioned before, I actually like these guys for a change. We see the effort, we see the anguish and we see their collective celebrations. It's easier to be onboard with how they act than it ever was in the Eichel era.

====

Bobby Bottle Service - Mar 11, 2022 at 9:30 AM

The Eichel clip that stuck out to me the most was a pre-recorded interview they showed at the beginning of the broadcast. He did his usual glossing over how his tenure came to an end, not mentioning that he asked for a trade a year prior to the injury... Whatever.

Then the interviewer asked him about becoming a Golden Knight. He took a deep breath and went into his canned "This is the place I always wanted to be". I could literally see him getting into character. I had heard that same speech before, just after he was drafted by the Sabres. I believed it the first time.

My only complaint (other than officiating) is that they didn't get an EI-CHEL, EI-CHEL, EI-CHEL chant going after the ENG.

Also can we get a billboard outside of T-Mobile? Something simple like "Jack, No we don't. Regards, Buffalo"

====

sabresfan129103 - Mar 11, 2022 at 10:01 AM

Couple of notes:
-Anderson was a beast last night. I think getting 300 wins was a main motivating factor on him coming back this season. I think now that he has that he may ride off into the sunset after this year.

- I haven't seen Olofsson shoot the puck like for a very long time. That goal was a vintage VO goal. I wonder if whatever was ailing him to finally starting to heal.

- You can't replace Jack. There are so few players of his caliber throughout the league. That being said this team was so devoid of NHL talent throughout the lineup that injecting multiple NHL caliber players is going to be pretty nice payoff in the longrun.

- If UPL is the starter next season and they can get a competent backup then I don't why they can't be a .500 team next year and then start pushing for a playoff spot the year after. This playing long stretches with AHL goaltenders needs to stop though.

We could have won with Eichel.

I'm not sure we can win with this ownership. 4 GMs, 7 coaches, 11 years, no playoffs. Players have come and gone, the only constant has been the ownership. Eichel obviously wasn't the savior we'd all hoped he'd be, but you can't blame making or missing the playoffs on a single player, its a 20 man roster. Eichel did his part, mostly.

Hard to win with that sort of toxic guy as the center of the team who regularly quit on the important defensive part of the game that helps teams win. Him losing a puck battle for Tuch to salt away the win was the sort of typical Eichel play when he was here. What was lacking was him converting on the PP or getting something off the rush.

Jack's commitment is to Jack, not to his team winning. And his commentary showed that.

I do think there were issues with Jack's leadership, or lack thereof. And throwing 11 years without the playoffs is a bit disingenuous considering Jack wasn't here that whole time. He's a fun player to watch, but he's more Petr Bondra than Mark Messier. His attitude on the bench, in interviews? Pretty shitty. I'm not surprised he went nuclear at the end of last season. I'm not surprised to see him trying to revise history and ignore the trade request he made a full year before the surgery red herring. He's a malcontent, and the Sabres are better with him gone.

old kummelweck - Mar 11, 2022 at 11:45 AM

The expectations were too high for Eichel. He wasn't generational and the fans wanted him to be. He believed he was right there with McDavid and he wasn't. We all defended him as fans when others tried to knock him down a few rungs - I think people get way too emotionally involved in their sport heroes.

It's actually a paradox of developing ultra-elite athletes that are always at the top. You tell them they are special and encourage narcissism, they enjoy unprecedented privilege their whole lives. The risk is then there for them to grow into selfish, narcissists, who are unable to be introspective.

I suspect this whole ordeal for Eichel ended last night. The book is closed now, he can move on. The Sabres can move on. I can see both him and the Sabres growing from yesterday.

Yesterday was collective catharsis.

This is where I wanted to be (even though my agents were trying to ochestrate getting me to NYR).

joshjull - Mar 11, 2022 at 11:53 AM

I would amend this to say maybe expectations were too high from management.

They went all in with that 8yr 10mil per deal before Jack had become that level player. But they had a ton of confidence in the player he was going to become. Then he was named captain. Then he effectively quit and asked for a trade 2yrs into that deal. Once ROR got traded it was effectively Jack’s team.

Maybe all of that was too much for him.

In short form. Jack was an entitled brat who hadn’t earned the contract yet. Giving it to him was a terrible idea that rewarded him before he earned it. That his contract and the captaincy were not good ideas because who he was as a person.

EDIT: Jame frequently would pit two players against each other for his debate focus. Drury vs Briere, Girgs vs Larsson, etc. Then aggressively went after the player that wasn’t his favorite. Many times it seemed incredibly pointless. His Jack takes were part of a wider Jack vs ROR framing. Which is why I didn’t take it as a legit argument but I was wrong.

I originally defended Eichel a lot. Jamie wore me down with a lot of reasonable proof.

Also, maybe unban him. He still loves to talk puck.

====

TehDoak - Mar 11, 2022 at 12:30 PM

Hard to win with that sort of toxic guy as the center of the team who regularly quit on the important defensive part of the game that helps teams win. Him losing a puck battle for Tuch to salt away the win was the sort of typical Eichel play when he was here. What was lacking was him converting on the PP or getting something off the rush.

Jack's commitment is to Jack, not to his team winning. And his commentary showed that.

Patrick Kane won 3 cups while being a complete douche. Insufferable, selfish players succeed all the time in this league. And oftentimes those players are built around as core pieces.

The issue is, selfish players in bad situations become the focus of the issue. And with Eichel, that is eventually what happened.

The idea that only good teammates win cups or are core players is living in some weird reality. Most professional athletes are terrible, spoiled people, who have been told they are special since they were in their early teens.

As I said, we could have won with Eichel. But not just Eichel, we needed more talent to be competitive and we never got to that level.

My favorite thing Granato has said since he's been here was:

And, if anything, that needs to be the lesson from all this. No one player can save a team. No matter how good. You need a lot of good players at every position.

He definitely prefers the well-rounded two-way player over the skilled scorer (Drury vs Briere best example). It's really just a debate of styles.

In Jack's case, he tipped the scales by acting like a child since roughly 2016.

I admit he was completely right. The problem I have with his arguments is that he develops these really strong opinions based on information that he couldn't possibly possess and then pushes them with religious fervor. Yeah, he will get it right every once in awhile based on pure chance, but he's also wrong a lot. His support of Tim Murray comes to mind.

I definitely think things could've gone a lot differently if we'd had people like Adams and Granato running the ship back in 2015. Jack came in with huge expectations that he obviously didn't live up to, so some part of the blame does belong with him, but why were we getting guys with known off-ice problems like Kane and Bogosian to come be the veteran presence on a young, rebuilding team? Why were we taking a team full of young offensive talent and coaching them into a defensive shell? And so many other bad decisions along the way...

Although, the Pegulas & Eichel relationship do have a lot of RGIII & Dan Snyder vibes.

Eichel may have been able to get Adams and Granato axed if he didn't like the way they handled him.

One of the biggest reasons I feel like the bills improved was that they finally created internal competition for spots. Just like the Sabres they had literally no depth for years

Wait, that's not how it works. The camp will be after the free agency, if Quinn and Peterka show themselves well there, then what to do with Hinostroza? Quinn has already completely dominated the AHL and will be in the NHL next season, obviously. Peterka also looked very good, but even if he starts next season in the AHL, he is unlikely to play there for a long time. I'm not against Hinostroza, but if the kids deserve their place, give it to them.

Yup and we haven't made the playoffs in 11 years.

It's good to have that depth knocking at the door. It's not like we are going to miss the cap space (Pegula may not want to pay though) if we sign Hino to $1.5M or a Cagguila-type. If our prospects can't beat out Hino or Cagguila :facepalm:

I guess I'm living in the past when the prospects provided the depth and Pominville came up to the team. I want Rochester to become the development team and the Sabres to make the playoffs. I guess you can say I am wrong, but they were 52-24-6 that season. Where are we now?

I'm not sure what I am proposing is going against Adams' view of not boxing out prospects. I'm talking about signing the Hino's of free agency to one year contracts, not 5 years. Not hard to move them aside if need be with where our cap is right now.

The problem is not in the cap or the contract, but in the place in lineup. Agree Hinostrosa if that be a spare? I do not think so. As a player I really like Hinostroza, but I don't see a place for him in the squad next season, if he accepts a smaller role, of course sign him. But obviously for Adams, kids are a priority, and he has already spoken about this more than once. He won't rush them, but it's not good for them to spend too much time in the AHL. Look at what's going on with some prospects at the Kings, it's bad for their development.

I understand that you have to fit players on the roster. You can have only so many.

I want an extra veteran or two in training camp. Sort it out as you go through camp. Injuries end up solving a lot of roster issues. I rather have roster options of Hino and Quinn rather than just Quinn and then rely on Murray as depth (sorry to Murray fans).

Yeah, players and agents are astute at studying depth charts for a team. Hino wants to get paid, but he also wants to be able to play to continue his career.

He hasn't made $1.5M since 2019-2020. Would he take that from the Sabres despite seeing a lot of prospects knocking at the door?

Jokiharju had a good game. He was railing Jack all game.

I'm not gunna pret nd I didn't root for Jack when he was here. He had games where he was the best in the league but it was never consistent enough and now I see why. Loved Tuch in his draft year and thrilled with him.

I made a post a few days ago in another thread that went something like this - I never really liked Eichel - his demeanor on and off the ice, his giving up on plays, his attitude during interviews. The way he seemed to sulk, the way he did not consistently lead by example, his arrogance. I hated what I heard about how he treated people out in public and in the arena, including some of his teammates. He seemed like a giant douchebag. A highly skilled douchebag who could raise his game to among the best in the league, when he felt motivated. He was a douchebag, but he was our douchebag - so I held my nose and rooted for him.

Once he was traded, I unplugged by nose and breathed fresh air again and really started to appreciate being a fan of the Sabres unfettered by how I felt about myself for rooting for him

Yesterday, in the post game comments he made, he made one of the stupidest comments I have ever heard. Paraphrasing, he said the building was the loudest he's ever heard it. Then sarcastically stated that all it took was seven years and him leaving for the building to erupt. I think he was trying to be clever and put down the Sabres fans for not realizing how great he was all that time. No Jack, it was the the real Sabres fans showing how they really felt about you - without having to hold their noses.

Pretty sure Eichel had a pre-thought response to the media well before puck drop.
I believe from "Scott Tenorman Must Die" ???? If so, a true gold-star episode.

B:

U: Jesus christ refs. could you be any more biased?
Glad you got to attend in person.

(and)

These are both "banner of the year" worthy. Well-played.

The Karen harumphing was great, then he immediately follows it with the seven months / me leaving comment as if that isn't a self-own.

That said, hopefully the booing stops. Nothing says "We deeply give many shits about you" more than booing every time someone touches the puck.
Best wishes to you, PK, T, A. Hope you all are well.

Agreed. I wanted it to work with Eichel because it's hard to come across his talent. I didn't need him to be Stevie Yzerman.
Yeah, but Eichel crapped on all the Stevie-Y-lites. A real leader doesn't need to put people down to build him/herself up.

And was often just a tad caustic to many that disagreed with him.
I usually sided with him. While I admire his commitment to "argue" his points, if I was ever that tenaciously determined to be right with, e.g., my spouse, I'd be a lonely man. I tried to meet up with him in FLA a couple times. Timing / logistics didn't work. Others who have met and/or know him say he's not argumentative & is actually easygoing in real life.

Good to see Craig Anderson get his 300th. If he wants to be back next season, even if UPL is the starter, I'm fine paying him whatever he wants because he seems a very cohesive piece to the Sabres team as a whole. Imagine how much worse off BUF would be this season if he hadn't agreed to sign with them.

Lastly, on the post-game tribute, as Anderson skates to the bench, you can see a fan holding an "Eichel Is A Quitter" sign.

here are the quotes.

I've always appreciated his talent, but f*** this guy. Hopefully this is the start of the Sabres turning their team around, you guys deserve better than this asshat.

Holy shit. I saw that and never put it together. If Eakin is doing that now, can you imagine the vibe in that locker room when Jack was there? It had to have been pretty, pretty tense.
It's just a petty red head quarrel. When Eichel was here he made sure that his red head superiority was known.

If I had one wish, it'd be that somewhere in Michagan Owen Power is thinking; "come over the middle next year Jack....."

Don't get your hopes up. Power has almost no mean to his game this far.

Not trying to be a dick but the dude literally just had surgery on his neck. Unless they just completely hate the guy then this is kinda low. But maybe they just really disliked him that much.

It's a motion that Eichel used to do all the time when he was annoyed, kind of a tick.

Pax has the right of it. Power is not that sort of defenseman.
