The future of VAR

I'm 99.9% certain refs will disappear and that it will all be based on "AI" (or whatever you would call it). Cameras, sensors etc. that can detect contact etc. Really no need for humans to get involved directly.

Don't like the current system though. Refs will soon be afraid to ref the game waiting for a stop in the game to hear what VAR says. Just a matter of time before that adjustment happens.

The next logical step would be for coaches to have an option of at least one challenge so they can request for a play to be reviewed. The way it's setup right now is ludicrous. You would think Brazil would have have asked for a review for a penalty appeal against Belgium. Same for Sweden against Germany, etc.

If that challenge doesn't overturn a referee's decision, that team would lose one of it's sub. If they used all their subs, the team is issued a red card and a player has to leave the field.

VAR turned a dark age sport and made it great again. It's not a perfect system, but by God it helps that you can replay penalty kicks and turn them into either the right call or a yellow card for diving - now players like half of the Barcelona or Chelsea teams need to take a second guess on if they're going to go down easy in the box or not.

The simple tweak that VAR needs now imo is to take the power away from the ref. Give it to the VAR judge and he makes the call. The problem in this WC was seeing the ref run down to the sideline to look at the monitor and that's just an unnecessary stoppage in a game that already has too many stoppages where we often see games where the ball is only in play for around 45-50 out of 90+ minutes.

Obviously the VAR judge can ask the official why he made the call but ultimately, the VAR judge has to be the guy that makes the decision. Honestly, it makes it easier for the ref too, he can just tell the players 'f*** off, the VAR judge decided this not me.'

I don't see this ever happening, much less with those penalties if missing a challenge

I think he future of var would be around offside. Using a form of composite camera shots to determine if a player was on/offside at the moment the ball was played within a couple seconds of the play itself.

That lets you use it not only for goal reviews, but to quickly determine if a play was offside that led to a free kick or corner.

I definitely support the use of VAR but it's a pity it didn't work like it should in the final. They shouldn't have let the first goal stand as it was clearly offside. If there was no VAR, that mistake would be relatively easy to accept cause it was an extremely difficult (almost impossible) decision to get right for the referees seeing it live.

But watching the video it's easy to see that Pogba clearly interferes with Mandzukic's balance as he's heading the ball. They should have gone to video and the goal should have been disallowed.

I was thinking the same a few weeks back.

Did you miss that Pogba was kept onside by Vida's foot?

There was the World, waiting to hear whether a goal would be called, automatically if the keeper loses a game of rock paper scissors, and almost automatically otherwise, based on the refs judgement of perceived intent of a player that did something he wished he hadn't, while primarily trying to do something else.

I think VAR is a great idea but it's just not being used properly. And it still comes down to opinion unless it's offsides or a clear goal. Even some offside calls being lead to goals weren't looked at.

VAR got the call right in the final IMO.

It’s not VAR’s job to get the call right though, it’s up to the ref to have a look at the replay and make a decision to which Pintana did but he took quite awhile. If it was obvious, the decision should have been made rather quickly one way or the other.

Yeah, but VAR was useful.

VAR is the best thing that happened to world football since a very long time. You will never get 100% of the calls right but it saves you embarrassing refereeing like in 2002 and 2010.
