Game was a pretty huge disaster in all areas. Powerplay was trash, chemistry looked terrible once again,

pretty much everyone was ass except for Di Pietro, who even despite his own flaws, was the only reason this team even had a chance going into the third

recapped it here for anyone who missed it: 2/14/2020 – Utica Comets vs. Syracuse Crunch

fair warning, I 100% jinxed Ferland pre-game

Utica overwhelmed for most of the game in every department. Syracuse has a physical team with some real toughness and pretty much abused the Comets at will. Tough for some of the players to play through all intimidation but give credit to some like Eliot, Lind, Gadjovich for standing their ground. Just one more way the silly Johnson (guess he's too busy trying to re-sign Hamilton) has screwed things up. Youngster should at least have something of safe place to play in.

DiPetro again got beat high but overall was excellent. Stopped numerous break aways and shots from directly in the slot. Got run a ton and you wonder how long he survives

Gadjovich - continues to show signs he might be a decent 4th liner in the future. Was good on the forecheck and in getting to the net.

Joulevi - there were times when he seemed to be getting into the flow of the play. But still prone to awful gaffes and too much timid play. Was a factor in both the first two goals against. On the first passed puck into traffic and Syracuse broke in and scored and on the second weakly poked at the puck at the blue line leading to another turnover and a goal. At the moment an unbelieveable disappointment who wouldn't be playing at the AHL level if it wasn't for his draft position. Eliot did not have great game but he outplayed Joulevi. Minus totals for Joulevi continue to escalate.

Boucher best player again. Got targeted and had rough game but fought thru to really contribute. Line of Lind - Baertschi - Boucher brought Utica back into the game in the third.

Jasek - made a brutal back check on the third winning goal.

Ferland - played a couple of shifts in the first and then left game with concussion issues. Getting a little ridiculous and Canucks need to shut him down if for no other reason that there could be some legal issues if he is hurt badly again. Good chance he never plays for the Canucks.

Goldobin finished very well on his goal but also made some terrible give aways with at least three of them leading to open breakaways. Can't see how he gets re-signed.

Hiding under WTG's bed...
I think his career is done but he won’t officially retire until his contract is finished.
In his defense, he hasn’t made much money in his career to date. Current deal which isn’t even a year old, is his first big money deal. Hopefully he won’t make a decision based on the need for that payday but the more important thing- his long term health.

Well can't he protect both by going on LTIR? Hockey players receive their full salary while on IR as all NHL contracts are guaranteed (unlike the NFL for example).

$9.5 M in five years isn’t chump change.

It's too bad about Goldy. You can see the sublime offensive talent at times. But in the d-zone he just seems to go into 'freeze frame', and will consistently make poor, low percentage plays. Just can't seem discipline himself to make the safe, boring play out his own zone when there's nothing there.

The Canucks probably hoped that one full season in Utica playing in all situations, including even the pk, would improve his defense. But just doesn't seem to be happening, and I would imagine he's KHL-bound at the end of the season.

Kole Lind started getting PK time late in the game yesterday, too which is a very intriguing development

Pretty much every guy who starts getting looks on the PK, is a guy the Canucks have interest in calling up for a cup of coffee. Bailey, Baertschi, Goldobin all got call-ups after starting getting rotated into the PK group. Maybe verdict from on-high is to see what they've got in Lind as a PK'er at the very least for a future look on the Canucks fourth-line?

That is interesting. Kole Lind will play in the NHL, but I don’t think it will be until next year. Needs one more offseason to get stronger and improve his footwork. The IQ, skill level and competitiveness are all NHL caliber right now.

Yep, I'm beginning to like the way the Canucks-Comets are rounding out the games of their top AHL prospects. MacEwen and Bailey were killing penalties before their recall, and even Goldy has taken a turn. Jasek as been all over the lineup. And Rafferty's game seems to evolving as well.

Versatility is the key to a player contributing in the NHL....if they can slide up and down the roster, kill penalties and even play fourth line minutes, they're dramatically increasingly their likelihood of a productive NHL career.

Ex-Marlies Coach, current Leafs Coach, Sheldon Keefe, just had a great quote making the rounds on twitter a couple days ago where he spoke to Pierre Engvall about wanting to try him out on his offside and Engvall said "I'm more comfortable on the right" to which Keefe retorted, "So if the Leafs say they need someone to call-up who can play the left, I should say you said no?"

Fantastic way of looking at it. It's not even about being good on one-side or the other, it's showing you CAN if the team needs you to

Jasek isn't meant for center, but in a pinch, the team now knows they have a safe option who plays his best on the left-wing but can be a competent center fill-in if they need it.

His shot-share numbers are atrocoius, but the willingness to learn and play something to improve is versatility to the team is likely giving him serious credit within the org.

No, but it’s not likely he had more than 1 of that 9.5 in the bank after taxes, agents, and living that lifestyle. It’s a lot for us but it’s not likely he has any worthwhile earning capabilities in any field outside of hockey. Add in the fact that there’s a greater than 0% chance of having lifelong ailments anyways due to his career choice and history. This contract was the deal that set his family for life and probably a generation more.

Comets need to get a goalie hot.....and in a hurry.....

Di Pietro's save percentage and GAA numbers don't look good, but the shot totals don't reflect how practicall 70% are high-danger scoring chances from high-percentage scoring positions/

Defense has been absolutely horrific in 2020. Team is no longer outscoring their problems away. Team is content to make those hail mary tallies that make the game interesting late if they can't blow things open in the opening period.

Comets are 17-5-1 -1 when they score first

When they give up the first goal they are 11-15-2-1

they're woefully mediocre at coming back from deficits

UlQjzFS.png

Across all situations, the Comets have out-attempted opponents with shots only 19 times out of 53 games played.

Everyone here knows they're a young team, but for a coach who's background is defence, and being an AHL defender, you'd think there'd be some kind of systems developed that doesn't involve standing still and waving your stick at your opponents and hope they miss the net.

It is good to know that the Canucks terrible defensive zone coverage is a complete franchise system problem. They clearly need to bring in a D guru to evaluate their system coverage and start over.

The franchise plays a very aggressive system where they blow the zone early in transition, forecheck aggressively and pinch down aggressively. It requires players to skate hard and is not forgiving of players making mistakes as there is often not much support. With players with good defensive tendencies it can be a good system that drives offense with. The problem is that it seems neither the Canucks nor Comets have enough of those or they are not being coached very well. When the system breaks down the Canuck allow a lot of high danger chances in the slot, it sounds like the same is happening with the Comets.
