5 THINGS - FLAMES VS. DUCKS

    US

The Flames have won four straight, most recently a 5-3 decision over the Chicago Blackhawks at the Scotiabank Saddledome on Saturday. The homeside outshot the visitors 41-15 but trailed 3-2 heading into the third period. Matthew Tkachuk had brought them within one thanks to a lazer of a wrist shot at 18:26. However, for the fifth time this season, the Flames rallied for a victory, with Sean Monahan and Michael Frolik scoring 66 seconds apart to take the lead before Mikael Backlund put the cherry on top with an empty-netter … Calgary has now scored an NHL leading 28 third-period goals, including five straight two games ago when they came-from-behind after trailing 4-1 to beat the Colorado Avalanche 6-5 at home. They have outscored their opponents 28-11 in the final frame for a +17 differential in the third period of games.

    THEM

The Ducks lost 4-1 to the L.A. Kings on Tuesday night, with the lone goal coming courtesy of Ryan Kesler in the second period when Anaheim was already trailing 3-0. John Gibson made 23 saves on 26 shots in the contest … The Ducks are now 1-6-2 in their last nine games, having snapped a seven-game losing skid on Sunday with a 3-2 overtime win against the Blue Jackets.

    US vs. THEM

The two clubs split their season series last year, each winning twice. The Flames finally broke their run of bad luck at the Honda Centre with a 2-0 shutout on Oct. 9. Mike Smith stopped a franchise-record 43 shots in that one. They also skated to a 3-2 victory on Jan. 6 at the Scotiabank Saddledome. The Ducks edged the Flames 2-1 on Dec. 29 and 4-0 on March 21 … This is the first of four matchups this season between the Flames and Ducks. These two teams will meet again on Feb. 22 in Calgary … This is a divisional match-up, with the Flames 1-1-0-0 against Pacific foes this season.

    THIS, THAT & THE OTHER

This: The Flames trio of Johnny, Mony and Elias have been one of the NHL's top lines this season. Gaudreau (6-13 - 19), Monahan (8-10 - 18), and Lindholm (9-8 - 17) have combined for 54 points through just 15 games … That: The Flames are second in the NHL in penalty-time differential at a +27:35, meaning the Flames draw a lot more penalties than they take as they've drawn a league leading 60 penalties this season … The Other: This will be captain Mark Giordano 's 45th game against the Ducks.

Dillon Dube didn't fly out to Anaheim with the team so it looks like Czarnik is in the lineup for the Anaheim, LA, and San Jose games.

Ryan Miller is expected to get the start tonight for Anaheim. Miller has a 1-2-0 record with a 2.44 goals-against average and .932 save percentage in four games this season.

I predict a 4-2 win by the Flames with Smith providing competent goaltending. The Flames dominate the Ducks in all 3 periods. Chucky gets the GWG.

I support this. Although, let’s pile on the Ducks and kick them while they’re down. 9-1 final score, so reverse Pens game.

Glad to see Czarnik back in. Hopefully he can make the most of it. Hathaway I think has been fairly good as far as what he's supposed to bring this season, but he's just not an everyday NHLer. Quality 13th forward who gets in every other week to inject some energy.

Good opportunity for Smith to get going as well. Said before the season I was a little concerned for him as he's the kind of goalie who plays better in games where your team is being outplayed(maybe that's his comfort zone considering all the years he spent in AZ). He's got to adjust his game and work on being more technically sound and maintaining focus so when there is an inevitable scoring chance he's ready.

Would love to see an absolute mauling, pedal to the metal the entire game to pay the Ducks back for all those years of subservience.

Peluso in for Hathaway is a wash. The fourth line will likely get close to no ice-time this game anyway and Czar will get more ice-time with the top 9 guys because of PK and PP anyway.

Flames need to get goals early and often. Game will come down to how Mike Smith plays ultimately.

According to the Flames website Peluso has been recalled and there is a possibility that he may play tonight instead of Hathaway

Games with the Ducks tend to get chippy, so getting Peluso in there might not be all bad.

Smith is decent on the road but he's terrible at home for some reason.

Seems like an easy fix - Smith gets all the road starts while Rittich gets all the wins at home.

Up front the Ducks do have 3 fairly decent lines and don't forget how good Getzlaf plays against the Flames. Kesler is always a factor if he gets under the skin of the Flames.

That said the Anaheim defense core is ready to be lit up by all 4 lines. I would be more worried if Gibson was starting.
