According to Torts there are no chemistry issues lol

Nor is it confidence. But he doesn't know what it is.

Now, my first inclination is that he does believe he knows what it is and just isn't saying. But he can't keep this up for long. A coach who's resorting to "I don't know," even if he does, is charged with a team that's got issues.

You may be right. My take, however wrong it may be, is that Jarmo brought in two players who don't play a Torts style game. He's not happy with 18-95 (and 28) together. Yet it's exasperated when he mixes them with other players as you have style blends that don't work. He can't criticize the additions by Jarmo so he's stuck. What I can't account for is why the core lines when intact have gone to hell which makes me question my own theory.

I think he means it's not on the newcomers, because even the 5 man units that have been here all year are sucking badly right now. I don't recall him saying it's not confidence. I think it sort of is, they're playing scared.

He responded "no" during last night's post-game when asked if "it" was "confidence."

I agree with the bolded.

It's not the additions, it's the effect of the additions on everyone else. They're all watching each other, and trying to get a feel for each other, and overthinking plays, which is a dangerous thing this time of year. They've gone from making automatic plays, tape to tape, to thinking to panicking.

Of course, you can't be that bad as a team without a number of things going wrong at once. But most of it is between the ears.

It's Dzingle, he's a cancer in the locker room.

j/k

It's looked pretty bad the last week or so, but tbh 4-3 since the Duchense trade isn't terrible, it's below our season pace, and a bit below playoff pace, but I have to believe its going to get better as these guys play with each other more. Its looked really bad at times on the ice, and I can't pin point anyone as the problem (including the coach), as I see for the most part a lot of really good individual efforts, but the chemistry is a mess. I'd try going back to the old 1st line, and dropping Duchense and Dzingle on the 2nd, roll those two lines at even TOI.

But I don't have a pair of Jack Adams trophies, so I'm good with whatever Torts does ;)

Recent play isn't really a reflection of Torts, IMO. Having said that, you don't add the pieces like we did and accept not making the playoffs. We barely squeaked out a win last night. This isn't looking good and we have a very short time frame to fix it.

If I'm Jarmo and JD, I'm plotting the coaching change right now.
Of course they should always be plotting a coaching change.
I prefer the term replace to fire. You fire someone that is so bad anything appears better. You should always be considering an upgrade to replace what you have. You just have to avoid the shiny new toy syndrome.

Yes. “Replaced”. As Jarmo addresses the media, he says: “I wish to announce we have replaced John Tortorella which a coach to be named later”

Only kidding around, Fairwhether.

By plotting the coaching change I mean getting on the phone with Coach Q and saying "Will you take a million dollars to take over this team for the rest of the season?" You can't just do that though, and then go back to Torts if Q says no. I don't think you can, can you?

I'm not a knee-jerk "fire the coach" guy, but at this point if this team doesn't at least get to Round 2 of the playoffs, it's time to find someone else who can get it there or beyond.

If Torts goes, does St. Louis go too? I'm willing to give Torts this last shot at making playoffs/winning a couple rounds. If we miss, man... Don't want to think about it.

So who are the candidates to replace Torts?
Sheldon Keefe should be #1

Sheldon Keefe Would Be A Bold Coaching Hire For The Dallas Stars

He’s also coached a lot of young players along the way that are now enjoying success in the NHL, many of whom speak highly of their former coach.
These results haven’t gone unnoticed by hockey media sources, many of whom brought up Keefe’s name as a potential coaching candidate for both the Florida Panthers and the Buffalo Sabres last year, and now the New York Rangers and Dallas Stars this spring. Apparently the Calgary Flames aren’t interested.
It’s safe to assume that owners and general managers all across the NHL have noticed Keefe as well

Keefe is my guy too for an upcoming guy. Q obviously is there.

One of the main reasons I want Torts gone now instead of after the season is because I kind of want to see what Shaw could do as an HC. I think he sees the game fundamentally differently than Torts, and could potentially be a good to great systems-oriented and player development coach. But I don’t know if I’d be willing to give him the reigns for a full season to test him out.

I'm not sure why this is still being discussed.....Torts isn't going anywhere for at least a year, since he signed that 2 year extension just late last year.
Ownership would never approve a move like that, and it's too much salary to eat - so like it or not, he's the CBJ head coach until at least the end of NEXT season.

It's not without precedent. Both Hitchcock and Richards had time left on their contracts, and firing the coach for (at this point) drastically unmet expectations is not unheard of.

Highly doubt anything happens between now and April 6th.

Might as well do as I do, and keep loading up against the Jackets at the sportsbook. It is funding my overseas April trip to drown my sorrows of not making the playoffs.

Here's how the last week shaped up.

Huge favorites against Edmonton. Turned a $25 bet into $75.
Slight favorites against Winnipeg. Turned the $75 into $160
Huge favorites against NJ. Wasn't in town....couldn't bet (lucky)
+200 to take PIT puck line (-1.5). Turned $160 into $480.
+134 to take PIT straight up tomorrow. Can turn the $480 into $1,123
Will probably take NYI puck line after that, which could turn the $1,123 into close to $3,000. Trip booked at that point.

This is the best CBJ lineup we're going to have for some years to come, they really shouldn't let Torts play out the string. The team isn't responding to him, no need to let this drag on.

I agree, I'd give it to Shaw. Shaw looked as shaken as Torts in his interview during the New Jersey game, that wasn't encouraging. But we need an inside guy who knows the players and systems well, and he has a great reputation for systems.

It's not without precedent. Both Hitchcock and Richards had time left on their contracts, and firing the coach for (at this point) drastically unmet expectations is not unheard of.

Not unheard of? My guess is it's the norm for coaches to be fired under contract.

My prediction: You will win Pens bet for Sat and then lose it all on NYI. DON'T BET IT ALL!

Keefe ironically played for Torts in Tampa.

If CBJ do end up hiring Keefe, would hopefully be like Sullivan-Torts: the apprentice much better than the teacher.
