One of the worst kept secrets is confirmed

They have signed so many big name free agents this off season it's going to be interesting to see how long it takes them to mesh.

Also, wondering how they fit this all within the salary cap come week 1 of the season, whenever that may be.

I don't think that a CFL and XFL merge would work unless they use the CFL schedule because not too many fans are going to sit in -30 degrees especially in Saskatchewan.

What's CFL schedule? Because XFL plays mostly during summer.

Thats not really true. XFL has mostly played Feb-May, not summer. CFL opens camp late May, regular season mid June to end of Oct/early Nov with the Grey Cup in late Nov. Its hard for CFL to move up much more due to complications with NFL draft.

XFL is Feb to July, CFL is June to Nov. The problem with the XFL schedule is there are too many outdoor stadiums in Canada and the first three months are too cold for fans to sit through, maybe April, but they'd have to be day games. Also the XFL schedule would be competing with the NBA and NHL playoffs, which wouldn't be good for business.

April to September seems like a decent compromise. Minimal overlap with NFL, and April got to be far better than February.

Im still unclear why the CFL would compromise with the XFL. The CFL has staff, players, stadiums, season ticket holders, tv deals, sponsors, etc. The XFL has...old helmets. The XFL wants the partnership to give them legitimacy, the CFL wants it to capitilize on the name branding of The Rock. But if anything changes its the XFL giving up everything not the CFL.

The CFL wont start in April. They want to wait until NFL draft and fallout completes. Huge for Canadians drafted/signed in NFL (who is and isnt) as well as gives them top priority on undrafted FA (after the first scoop up by NFL).

Tbey certainly arent ending in September. Labour Day and week after is the CFL marquee weekends. They arent giving that up.

All good points on why CFL can’t start other than JUne. But if XFL didn’t have anything to offer they would not be sitting down with them right now.

Is the CFL being held hostage by MLSE?

A lot of talk surrounding the CFL's plan of action and a lot of it is not good.

Two days ago, the head mod of the CFL Reddit made a post where he was told by insiders that the merger was all but official and that MLSE was the driving push behind it. Normally you'd brush off a Reddit post, but the thing is the mod actually has ties all over the league. Due to it being the only decent sized mainstream CFL community a lot of insiders will keep in touch with him. That and if I recall he actually had official ties to the league office.

Given the fact the league hasn't said shit on worried. I will also never forgive MLSE if they end up sacrificing the CFL because no one gives shit about about football in Toronto. The league doesn't need them to succeed and they can go eat it.

Another interesting point. A lot of people here are bitching about how other big Canadian entities like Air Canada for a "bailout" from the feds to stay afloat and why they were proitized.

The real question should be why is it that those entities were willing to take a loan with interest that would hand the feds equity, while the CFL wants it interest free?

A merger between CFL and XFL means the league will total 9 teams all in Canada. The XFL exists in name only. It failed massively in 7 of the 8 markets they tried last time.

None of it makes any sense, not sure how anyone can buy this?

League also looking at the possibility of starting with a more west heavy home schedule to start. Lots depends on how the virus does of course.

This league wont survive and neither will the XFL.

North american style fooball is only big enough for one league.

Edmonton to announce it's new name today at 10 MST/ 12EST

According to some leaks, it will be the Elks.

I would have preferred Elk but this is the only one that made sense after the change.

Guessing because those entities will return to making millions within the next year or two where the CFL was already on shaky ground and just lost a full year of operations. CFL knows it'll be hard to pay back the loan to begin with, let alone with interest on top of that.

Agree about the CFL. Honestly, I don't understand how anyone can think its a better product than the NFL. The games just seem so boring and uneventful.
