Hello you all!

As you may have noticed, I have been running a thread called "Interested in IIHF history?" on International Tournaments for almost seven years. Since I haven't been updating the tournament history after 2010, I decided to start a thread with "The Centennial Hockey Website" here. And the address still is:

http://kotisivu.dnainternet.fi/ruskeeah http://www.centennialhockey.comlu.com/

OK, the site will contain presentations of the LIHG and Olympic tournaments between 1910-2010 and the scoring stats as well as I know them.

Nice to be here, after being on International Tournaments since the 22nd of April 2006 and receiving 37,073 views there!

All the best
Jukka

I think this is a fantastic resource for projects like the ATD and Top-Player threads, as well as our standard arguments over players who have hard-to-find international records.

I'd just like to say that the Olympics for many years pre-NHL participation was a lesser quality tournament than the World Championships becouse the WC had some pros participating since the seventies. I've in a long time not been able to understand why the Olympics 1976-1994 are seen as more important than the WC. Worst of all obviously Lillehammer where not even the best russians and czechs were present, that tournament was a joke.

Great site. I have visited there more than few times.

Do you (or anyone else) happen to have Germanys roster in 1911 European championships? I have seen one German site wich lists Johan Ollus (probably you have heard of him, in a way the first Finnish hockey star) to Germany team. But the Czech sources doesn´t have his name on the roster. He played in Berliner Schlittshuhclub and if I have understood right it represented Germany in those championships?

Hello you all!

I've updated pool C 1986 and I have to especially apologize for the inaccuracy of the Bulgarian scoring stats.

Darth Yoda; I hope, that you haven't been greeted with yellow feathers and blue tar for you view - thinking about Lillehammer 1994. ;)

OK, more seriously: I'd include the 1980-88 Olympic tournaments as serious ones. Since there was no WC tournament that year. The Olympic tournament was also a WC during 1920-1968.

Yes, I do know Johan Ollus, but unfortunately he isn't regarded that much in Finland. Finnish people consider the exhibition game in Tampere january 1928 as the true beginning of Finnish hockey. I haven't found his name from the official European Championship tournament rosters either.

I guess, that the European Championship tournament was for "nationals only", while with the LIHG tournaments the teams could also include foreign players.

All the best

Because WCs became an afterthought after the iron curtain fell and the defections to NHL. WCs were incosistent and could be great one year and lousy the next. Players werent as motivated and so on.

But Charles Hartley wasn´t German and he played on that team. The source is book Deutsche Eishockey Meisterschaften by Stephan Müller.

The book list both Ollus and Swedish Hans Georgii to the team. The different names in Wikipedia (wich isn´t really the best source) gives you players called Erik Wahrmuth and Träger. I actually don´t know what is their source.

If Ollus was part of that team he would be the first Finnish hockey medalist over fifty years before we got our first medal (same would go ofcourse to Hans Georgii and Sweden only shorter time). If thats true he should get some more recognition. But it can be just mistake or I am misunderstanding something wich could be very well true :).

edited. Did manage to skip the OFFICIAL part when reading your post. So its probably just mistake in the book.

Hello you all!

I have updated Bulgaria and China from 1985. But I have some doubts about some scores - despite the copy seems to be an official one - and any corrections can be pm:ed to me.

Sanf; there is also a player called Tikkanen in the old German league stats!:handclap:

Lets not act like the Olympics were played by a bunch of no-bodies or had a lack of talent. I hate to dismiss the Olympics because for its such a long tradition of great athletes and we underrate them because their not getting paid or are not in the NHL. A lot of these Olympics Hockey Players back in the day were on their way to a pro career and NHL success, and the best part was their 3/4 years of hard and nonstop training leading to each Olympics.

Lets not underrate or dismiss the domination of Soviet Hockey success. Remember, many occasions where the non-NHL players of the Soviet League and National team beat the almighty NHL teams, NHL all star teams and WHA all star teams. 1972 was only the entrance to almost two decades of hockey excellence and in their first show they almost won the series among NHL's best. The series still kind of weirds me out because though ill respect Canada's victories and overall win of the series, they played very unethically. Watching parts of the game, researchin the series and seeing many highlights and films on the event the Canadians got away with a lot. Bobby Clarke broke the ankle of Soviets top player is a prime example. You can Soviet players were chippy as well but I believe they just played hard hockey. Anyway to Digress...

Olympic hockey and international hockey for the most part between 1960-1990 should not be looked down at. It was great hockey, truly awesome history and many great players participated.

Hello Darth Yoda!

The Canadian members may correct me, but my personal impression of the time between 1920-1968 is;

Being a member of an Olympic team and a WC team was regarded as a credit, while trying to become a player in the NHL.

It went beyond 1968
Really up until pro players were allowed to play in IIHF events.
There was a National team program run out of the Father David Bauer Centre in Calgary.
In 1992 the City of Campbellton NB was encouraged to build it's 2 pad ice, swimming pool and other stuff as a place for the the National team to play exhibition games on International size ice so both surfaces were 200 x 100. One seats 3,500.
A few exhibition games were played there.
Now in NB there are 4 International size ice pads the 2 in Campbellton, 1 in Dieppe (Moncton area) built more for short track speed skating..also a 2 pad Arthur J LeBlanc Centre. Plus one in Fredericton the Grant-Harvey Centre a 2 pad as well which the International pad was built more for sledge hockey with the slide in/out gates and see through boards at the benches.

Hello Alpine!

Thank you for the additional information.

And like you have noticed, folks, the site is still far from perfect. So, any confirmed information about missing goalscores and assists is welcome.

And; if anyone can present a team photo of Sweden and Switzerland from the 1951 Paris World Championship, a presentation on this thread is most welcome too!

Well in 60´s there was atleast Ted Maki and Henry Akervall (played also in Finland) who were Finnish-Canadians. Don´t remember the years.

There is the case of Hugo Mackie in 1937 Kimberley Dynamiters. Many Finns were creative when they "translated" their name. Pronunciation of Finnish surname Mäki actually sounds pretty much same that Mckay or Mackie so many seemed to translate their surname that way. But A) I´m not 100% sure was that the case with Hugo B) He actually fractured his skull before the world championships so I´m not sure if he actually played or was he just part of the team.

Yes Duke (Dulio) "I´ll meet you at halfway" Scodellaro was Italian-Canadian goalie. Was a roaming goalie in a time when it wasn´t popular style. Was on NY Rangers training camp (edit. sorry remembered this wrong. It was Lester Patricks Hockey School) at 35 (didn´t manage to impress Lester Patrick) and had try out with Bruins in 39. Guy Patrick wanted him badly to Vancouver Lions in Pacific Coast Hockey League and write him a letter containing ten reasons why he shoud begin his professional career. I guess he wasn´t intrested and never played as professional.

Lot of trivia.

Hello Sanf!

Well, Ted Maki was a Galt Terrier in 1962 and Akervall was an olympian of 1964. With Hugo Mackie, not so sure either.

Thank you!

Hello you all!

I made a trip across Canada, visiting most of the hockeyvilles sending teams as Team Canadas between 1920s-1960s.

I have presented some photos from the trip.

The section is made in the memory of my sister, Anu Suvi Helmilä (1951-2913).

All the best
