The Case for drafting Jonatan Berggren

I think Berggren will go top 20.

Then again, I asked a few years ago why Konecny wasn’t in the conversation at 7, & he lasted until 24. That was an even deeper first round, but it’s funny how teams get blinded by size.

I don't think it's size so much. More exposure than anything. He didn't come into the season with a big reputation and stuck in the Swedish Junior league for most of the year. Tough to crack the top 20 with that profile. I will be curious to see if he or Bokk crack the top 20. Bokk does seem to get a little more pub, but neither is a center.

I’m buying the hype, his skating ability+skills+motor/hockey IQ remind me of a mini Hischier.

Another thought that pops in my mind: Berggren looks like a more skilled version of Farabee...

I’d say size contributes to some players being drafted too high (e.g. Morin, Crouse) which pushes some smaller players down. So it’s a combo of bigger players getting overrated & smaller players getting penalized.

But I agree exposure is part of it. Also the fact that he wasn’t on a lot of radars as a big time prospect at 16. His play this season was a surprise, & I think a lot of draft sites are being overly influenced by their preseason rankings.
