The Canucks are falling apart

The situation within the Canucks organization has gone from bad to f***ed.

This is quickly becoming a Sabres level catastrophe. We've gone from rumors of internal Aquillini family conflict and power plays to news of Jim Benning returning after the some of the most unsuccessful 7 years of management in professional sports history and missing the playoffs for his 5th year in charge. One has to start questioning conflicts of interest and just what is keeping Benning around, at this point. No one even knows what Weisbrod does within the organization after his history of destroying professional sports franchises nearly single-handedly. Ownership answers to no one and appears to be highly involved and invested in running the team themselves.

Aquillini, Benning, Weisbrod and co. have pushed out numerous high profile, high value assets out of the organization such as scouting head Judd Brackett, president Trevor Linden, and potentially now their famed goalie coach Ian Clarke; one of the best goalie coaches in the league, who Thatcher Demko has more or less resorted to desperately begging management to bring back -

Numerous former players, including Chris Tanev and top 10 goalscorer Tyler Toffoli, have come out and have made remarks about how they felt scorned and disrespected - and disappointed - with the Canucks management not even going so far as to even make an offer to them or contact them at all in the offseason. The level of not just incompetence, but unprofessionalism, is tearing the team apart from the inside; and now it's rumored that players want out.

It has to be argued at this point that the Canucks are in potentially a worse state than the Sabres - if not, they're right there with them. Even the Senators under Melnyk and Dorion look like they're being run like Tampa Bay in comparison. With no fans in the stands, this really hasn't gotten the media attention it should probably warrant at this stage. This could be an utter collapse of this teams core if things aren't addressed immediately - and it might already be too late.

The owner loves his meat puppet GM too much to change anything.

Make no mistake that Benning is an absolute moron of a GM and the worst in the league, but this goes back to ownership wanting to play fantasy GM with a real team and not give up control by hiring a new GM that wouldn't let him control things.

Title is misleading. Falling apart? The covid problem killed their season and the never recovered. Canucks had a good ten year run and are now rebuilding.

Pure speculation by people on Twitter who are paid to cause problems
I have been very realistic and charitable with this management group over their tenure and have only listened to reputable sources on the matter. After all of Linden, Brackett, Tanev, Toffoli - the list goes on and on - have been pushed out with explicit, first-hand, articulated ill-will towards the franchise and those in charge; and core players have expressed how shocking it's all been and how frustrated they are with things and have had your Captain say he "doesn't want to go through another rebuild"; it sort of reaches past the point of plausible deniability, doesn't it? Even if you take zero second-hand media reports into account, there is more than enough to see that there is a rot in the office.

They're bad but not sabres bad. The core is excellent.

All the canucks need right now, is to clear bad contracts and legit GM who can pull it off.

I mean moreso as in the state of the team and its management. The core is excellent - but if media reports are to be believed - and they're not out of the question because of sentiments that have been expressed over the course of the year by players - the Canucks could be at risk of some of them walking out the door. It is as bad as it looks, I think.

Have you been in coma for nearly a decade? The good ten year round ended ten years ago LOL they've been rebuilding for nearly a decade and are still in the basement of the worst division in the league

I guess fans of one of the losingest franchises in NHL history have a right to demand president's trophy or bust
Blame covid for this year though. They had the worst outbreak in the league

What they have been stuck rebuilding Benning's whole tenure since his second season?? He's a complete moron and has run this organization into the ground. I'm kind of curious how the Aquilini family is successful in the business world considering how they run the Canucks.

This is the same Media who speculated all morning yesterday that Benning was going to be fired. Not that the Canucks would announce a decision on their management team.

As a realist, I did hope that the Canucks would fire Benning, but in the end, he's doing what the owner wants. If this was a Burke/Quinn, they likely would have been fired for standing up to the owner. In the end, it's the owner's team, so they would lose that battle. Jim is a "Yes" man.

There are players that the Canucks do need to trade because they have screwed up their salary cap so much. They still have Roussel, Eriksson, Beagle, Holtby under contract next season for $16.3 mill in cap space, which based on their play, they should only be getting like $5 mill. That's easily $11 mill on wasted cap, along with Jake Virtanen, whom they believed in and gave a 2 year term but he's regressed and now dealing with a Sexual assault lawsuit and criminal investigation.

So, they really can't improve next season. All of the cap savings from moving off Sutter, Edler, Spooner buyout, Sven Baertschi, etc. will just be transferred to Hughes and Pettersson.

So, it's another season of borderline shot at the playoffs at best.

Given the age of Miller, it's best to move him for a Mantha like return. Then they have to look at Bo Horvat. 28 in 2 years as a UFA. How well will he age on the next contract? Schmidt, hasn't fit in, but they don't have much in the D system to offload him. Myers is overpaid for what he brings, but with a backloaded contract, not seeing other teams wanting him.

Worry is that Benning and the owner want a quick fix instead of building a contending team.

They had a bad start to the season, but any chance at turning things around was destroyed
Again, if this was simply a promising young team with a bright future that had a down year, this post wouldn’t exist. People just looking at the shiny toys from a the outside and failing to look at the big picture won’t understand. I’d enlighten you but it would probably take a short essay to catch you up on all the damage that’s been done.

Please write the essay about how Tyler Toffoli would have willed this team to the playoffs this year.
