Also, most of the better players were protected in side deals.

That's a bad move given their market.

Yep. This was never about competing now. It has always been about securing the best possible assets to set this team up moving forward. Even if the picked the best players they would still never compete with the top teams in the league. I'd bet in 3 or 4 years from now they'll have one of the best prospect pools in the league.
