At Bruins own version of 'Idol,' hunt is on for next Rene...

On Nov. 2, Todd Angilly was working as a bartender on level 5 at TD Garden when he heard a raucous noise.
He was interacting with fans and taking drink orders before the Bruins hosted the Vegas Golden Knights. There were only a few minutes before puck drop and the building was already loud, but he couldn’t figure out the commotion.

Suddenly, a Garden game-day employee grabbed Angilly and said his services were needed at ice level.
He was about to sing the national anthem. So, two security guards escorted him to the Zamboni entrance in time to sing because the fill-in scheduled for that evening had not made it. He was wearing his TD Garden uniform, so the event staff found a bull gang member’s black and yellow Bruins jacket for Angilly to wear.

“It smelled like gas and oil and they said, ‘Go,’” Angilly recalled. “I went on the ice and was like, ‘Let’s do it.’ I had a good time. Then went right back up to the bar, ‘Whatta you have? Bud Light. Jameson. Bud Light.’ It was fun.”

The 17,565 in attendance went crazy for his rendition, and now the 43-year-old Lynnfield, Mass., resident and native of Warwick, R.I., could find himself in a regular rotation as an anthem singer before Bruins game at TD Garden.

Angilly on Wednesday took part in what might be considered Bruins Idol, with the team holding auditions among a talented crew of singers to find folks who can replace Rene Rancourt, the team’s longtime crooner who retired after last season.

The Bruins received 600 applications from people who wanted to compete for the anthem role and narrowed it down to 52 who auditioned on Wednesday. The plan is to have 25 on a rotation to sing the anthem next season.

There was some serious vocal talent competing. The Bruins are looking for singers with a strong presence, vocal quality and the ability to finish the anthem under 90 seconds, as NHL rules require.

So if Rene is coming back for 5 games that would leave 39 games for 25 singers.

I'm wondering if Todd only wants to work a few games as being a bartender on the club level is very lucrative. He works as a probation office in Salem and recently bought a house in Lynnfield.

That's probably the answer! If they were 100% enamored with him maybe they would've closed the deal . Maybe he couldn't commit to every game? Maybe there's doubt within the group making the choice? Maybe they just want to make certain that they're picking someone who can carry the responsibility all season? Who knows. I just don't understand the ratcheting up of anxiety of s0me here regarding the process.

I love that Rene is still going to appear in some rivalry games.

I could have sworn that he announced his "retirement" many years ago...and then he just did not leave. Does anyone else recall this? I know he took a lot of pride in working without a contract, but I swear he said he was departing like five or six years ago and he just never did.

I really think the problem is the money he would lose by singing - Bartenders do VERY well at Bruins games, so so at Celtics game (hockey fans tip better)

I am glad to hear Rene will come back for special events.

The Christmas Carols thing was really stupid to me the first time I saw it, and then I realized how amazing and unique it was (at least I don't know of other pro teams who have their anthem singer walk through the crowd during intermission singing holiday tunes).

I looked into it more deeply and I found that apparently what happened is that he was laid off five years ago and no one ever told him about it; but through some kind of glitch in the payroll department, he still gets a paycheck. So we just went ahead and fixed the glitch.

Yes, and I'm sure that there are others who are very capable and talented enough to do the job. To those saying that they "ought to just hire Todd Angilly, we don't know if he can commit and also there are (IMO) other things that have to be taken into consideration. To those who want this search to end I say: What's the hurry?

People tip at hockey games? I can't justify it at $18/beer at the ACC

I hate the concept of tipping - restaurants/arenas/bars/etc. should pay everyone a living wage, but hell, at this point I'll settle for minimum wage. It feels creepy, especially when you hear some of the stuff that waitresses/bartenders in their 20s have to put up with. Your job shouldn't be a lottery where one night you get a group of drunk folks who forget to leave a tip, and the next night Bobby Orr tips you $4,444. But if it's the way the system is, I gotta respect it for the waitstaff until it changes.

As far as the tipping in the Club section - they automatically add on a 15% to your tab at the bar on Level 5 that's behind the Bruins net (near where Dale does his intermission reports). That's $2 on a $13.33 beer. I'm sure lots of people who don't know/notice that tip either the standard 20% or $1 beer/$2 cocktail on top of that 15%, so that's got to be good money for Todd. (N.B. I'm not sure if that's the exact bar he works at.) Personally, I don't tip at concession stands unless there's something really wacky going on (I spill popcorn all over the place, or I have an absolutely humongous order for 10 people that's a pain in the rear.) If it's in-seat service, yup, tip. If it's free soda in the AT&T Sports Deck, yup, I tip. Same for Fenway - bring me food in the stands (BEER HEAH!), I tip. If I get up to get food from you, I thank you...most of my Internet snooping on tipping etiquette supports that.

I'm glad Rene is coming back - I'm not surprised that he's doing the Christmas carols. Love it or hate it, it's a tradition. I'd like a little more variety in the carols (I think it's always "Home for the Holidays", "Jingle Bell Rock", "Blue Christmas", "Let It Snow", and "Rockin' Around the Christmas Tree"), but hey, as long as Rene gets a good bit of egg nog in him before he goes out, I'm happy.

Personally, I don't think I was as blown away with Todd's singing as everyone else was, but I do think he's good enough to be in the rotation. I don't know how many games Rene did, but it had to be at least 16 or 17...pretty sure he did all 10 Canadian games, as I don't remember anyone else singing O Canada. Not sure if Todd Angilly has the "intangibles" to be entertaining for that many games, but I'm open to giving him a shot. If there's 25 people "in the rotation" for the non-Rene games, it doesn't sound like many will get multiple shots - maybe if someone really stands out, they'll pick up a bunch more. Or maybe they'll wait until next year to make a formal announcement...which isn't a bad thing.

That said, the story of Todd's first anthem singing was definitely cool. I think he got invited to sing a second time last year after being pulled for the Golden Knights, no?

You know, I just had an awful thought when rereading the title of this post.

I hope to hell they're not going to do some "fan vote" thing. Honestly, nothing brings out the crotchety old man in me more than seeing "text your answer" crap. I'm fine with a sort of "live audition" this year to nail down the job next year - and, naturally, fan reaction (as judged by whoever in the Bruins front office is in charge of hiring anthem singers) is important. But please don't turn it into some stupid social media contest.

Now get off my lawn....I'm not going to answer your NESN/Dunkin Donuts poll.

If you saw the rest of the auditions you might be blown away. I don’t know how they’re going to pick 24 out of those. Glad Rene will be handling most of the O Canadas, some of them were downright painful.

I wish I had paid closer attention sooner. My wife is a trained opera singer. She’d kill it.

Sounds like they have all the people they want for this season.

Bruins need to go all in on this one. Backes and the rights to Khoklachev to Chicago for Jim Cornielison

I know this is sacrilege, but I cannot stand Cornelison. Over the top bombast and barker-like showmanship dressed up like some formal ceremony. Honestly, he's my least favorite anthem singer ever, next to Kate Smith (who didn't even sing the anthem).
