Rene WILL come back for at least 5 games next year, 2 with Montreal and Toronto and December 22nd vs Nashville for Christmas.
At Bruins own version of 'Idol,' hunt is on for next Rene...
On Nov. 2, Todd Angilly was working as a bartender on level 5 at TD Garden when he heard a raucous noise.
He was interacting with fans and taking drink orders before the Bruins hosted the Vegas Golden Knights. There were only a few minutes before puck drop and the building was already loud, but he couldn’t figure out the commotion.
Suddenly, a Garden game-day employee grabbed Angilly and said his services were needed at ice level.
He was about to sing the national anthem. So, two security guards escorted him to the Zamboni entrance in time to sing because the fill-in scheduled for that evening had not made it. He was wearing his TD Garden uniform, so the event staff found a bull gang member’s black and yellow Bruins jacket for Angilly to wear.
“It smelled like gas and oil and they said, ‘Go,’” Angilly recalled. “I went on the ice and was like, ‘Let’s do it.’ I had a good time. Then went right back up to the bar, ‘Whatta you have? Bud Light. Jameson. Bud Light.’ It was fun.”
The 17,565 in attendance went crazy for his rendition, and now the 43-year-old Lynnfield, Mass., resident and native of Warwick, R.I., could find himself in a regular rotation as an anthem singer before Bruins game at TD Garden.
Angilly on Wednesday took part in what might be considered Bruins Idol, with the team holding auditions among a talented crew of singers to find folks who can replace Rene Rancourt, the team’s longtime crooner who retired after last season.
The Bruins received 600 applications from people who wanted to compete for the anthem role and narrowed it down to 52 who auditioned on Wednesday. The plan is to have 25 on a rotation to sing the anthem next season.
There was some serious vocal talent competing. The Bruins are looking for singers with a strong presence, vocal quality and the ability to finish the anthem under 90 seconds, as NHL rules require.
So if Rene is coming back for 5 games that would leave 39 games for 25 singers.
I'm wondering if Todd only wants to work a few games as being a bartender on the club level is very lucrative. He works as a probation office in Salem and recently bought a house in Lynnfield.
