Welcome to the official beer and nightlife thread of the Pittsburgh Penguins.

As a service to new members, and to people from other cities that might be visiting, this post will grow to contain a bunch of information about beers to try and places in Pittsburgh to try them.

Great Beer Bars in Pittsburgh
Name | Website | Part of town | Why you should go there Fat Heads | http://fatheads.com/ |Southside|42 beers on tap, decent selection of bottles, the best bar food in Pittsburgh.
The Sharp Edge Beer Emporium | http://sharpedgebeer.com/ |Friendship|28 Belgians on tap, 25 American Micros/Imports on tap, bottle selection so big that it needs a menu, decent but overpriced food. Their late night (after 10) and happy hours are great deals, though. HH is from 4:30 - 6:30 on weekdays and is half-off Belgian drafts, boneless wings and individual pizzas.
Smokin' Joe's Saloon | http://www.smokinjoessaloon.com/ |Southside|60 beers on tap, 350+ bottles available, good bar food.
D's Six Pax & Dogz | http://www.ds6pax.com/ |Regent Square|15+ beers on tap, 1000+ bottles in a beer cave from which you can mix and match six packs, great bar food (though it's pretty unhealthy in a lot of cases).
Harris Grill | http://www.harrisgrill.com/ |Shadyside|15+ beers on tap, occasional use of a Randall the Enamel Animal, decent selection of bottles, good happy hour every day, awesome bar food, nice front and rear patio areas.
Piper's Pub | http://piperspub.com/ |Southside|20+ beers on tap, great selection of scotch, great English/Irish pub food.
Point Brugge Café | http://www.pointbrugge.com/ |Point Breeze|6 beers on tap, decent bottle selection, fantastic food and ambiance.
DISH Osteria & Bar | http://www.dishosteria.com/ |Southside|10 beers on tap, decent bottle selection, fantastic food and ambiance.
Buffalo Blues | http://www.b2restaurants.com/buffaloblues/ |Shadyside|Good beer selection, decent food with good specials each night. Good place to watch sporting events, with lots of TVs and specials during games.
Fuel & Fuddle | http://www.fuelandfuddle.com/ |Oakland|10 beers on tap, great bottle selection, great bar food.
The Library | http://www.thelibrary-pgh.com/ |Southside|10+ beers on tap, decent bottle selection, decent food, the menus are made out of books, so you can do a little light reading while you wait for your food and drinks to arrive.
Primanti Brothers | http://www.primantibrothers.com/ |Strip District, Oakland, Southside, Downtown|Beer selection is pretty weak, but it's the home of the legendary Primanti Bros sandwich. Take some fresh Italian bread, add some kind of meat and cheese of your choosing, and then smother the crap out of that with cole slaw and fries.
Church Brew Works | http://www.churchbrew.com/ |Strip District|Decent selection of beers brewed on the premises, good food that is somewhat overpriced, you get to drink in a church that has been remodeled into a brewery. The food and the beer will both probably disappoint you for the price, but it's something everyone should do at least once.
Penn Brewery | http://www.pennbrew.com/ |Northside|Decent german food and fresh beer brewed on the premises.
Firehouse Lounge | http://www.firehouse-lounge.com/ |Strip District|Decent selection of bottles and drafts, cool atmosphere, dancing (if you dig that sort of thing).
Hofbräuhaus | http://www.hofbrauhauspittsburgh.com/ |Southside|Decent beer brewed on the premises, decent food, cool atmosphere.
Bloomfield Bridge Tavern | http://www.myspace.com/polishpartyhouse |Bloomfield|Dirt cheap beer and dirt cheap polish food. Some of the best pirogies in town.
Bites and Brews/Elbow Room | http://www.b2restaurants.com/bitesandbrews/ |Shadyside|Decent beer selection, good food.

Pre Super Bowl weekend Beer Run. Was in line while some timer went off and got 10% off my purchase. Got the Maredsous and Adriaen cheap on clearance. The latter I've never tried, but it was only $3.96 for a 750 so I figured why not.

I give Husker the Johnnie Walker seal of approval to start v4. He has been carrying this thread for some time now. I feel terrible that the alcohol thread I started has gotten out of my hands a bit as i haven't had as much time to dedicate to alcohol consumption in recent years. My job has taken over my drinking time!

I plan to snag some Nugget Nectar soon though.

If I just had half the liver HT obviously has... I'm enjoying a Southern Tier Mokah Stout. That's pretty much a one and done for me tonight.

Great call on the Weihenstephaner Hefeweissbier man. Weihenstephaner is one of my favourite brands for a Hefeweizen. Too bad it's been out of stock here for months. :(

But yeah if you can find them, their Hefeweissbier Dunkel (dark wheat) and Kristallweissbier is great too. Yes Sir, Weihenstephaner is one of my favourite breweries for sure. I also have two great Weihenstephaner branded weizen glasses that my fiancee got me last year.

I made it to Hopworks yesterday and seemingly had one of everything. In addition to the great beer and food, if you are interested in sustainable business practices, this place is tops.

not only is alcohol way more convenient to buy in SC than PA, it is also way cheaper. I'm excited.

Shopping in a non PA beer store is enlightening, that's for sure. Makes you hate PA beer laws even more.

Sipping a NN for the Pens game but my beer consumption has been way down. I've always liked a well made Manhattan as much as anything but I've really been choosing cocktails (usually bourbon or gin) over beer lately.

Bell's Hopslam is excellent. 10%abv, feeling it and I haven't finished the first. Really nice floral hops with a touch of honey which really helps balance the bitterness of the hops.

The store I go to has the original and hefe. They might get the others in at different times of the year, though. Might ask about their Dunkel next time I'm up there. Already need to ask about the Ephemere Black Currant.

Opening the bottle of Adriaen Dark Gold Ale...strange experience. Difficult to get the cork out, no co2 pop when the cork did come out and there is no live carbonation present. Not sure if I got a bad bottle or what, but it's flat. Actually tastes like a pretty decent Belgian dark, very fruity sweet. But this isn't right without carbonation. If it's spoiled, I'll be sick in the morning...

Reading reviews online, this should definitely have plenty of carbonation, just like most Belgian Darks...

Picked up two six packs of good ol' Samuel Adams Boston Lager this evening.

Also bought and tried a can of this...

T'was a very refreshing IPA. Very hoppy and delicious. I'd definitely buy it again. Plus it has shown me that Canada can make good beer.
