Some of the discussions on HF about fighting got me thinking about Toronto's 4th line as the season winds down to playoffs.

The 4th line on any given night is comprised of:

Orr
McClement (at times)
Mclaren
Steckel (at times)
Komarov (at times)

What is Carlye going to do as the season winds down and the fights become less of a focus and more on "playoff style" hockey?

Would you keep Mclaren McClement Orr as a line?
Should it be adjusted to a 4th liner checking line?
Who would you recommend they bring in to fit this role? Hamilton? Ashton? Colborne? Possible trades?

My only thinking behind this was, IF! the Leafs were in the playoffs, you couldnt put Mclaren and Orr out there could you?

Lineups are never set in stone; especially with a tinkering, line matching coach like Carlyle. I'd expect the fourth line will play out as it has been all season.

If we're looking later in the season with Lupul returns as well, then I think the 4th line will look like Komarov - McClement - McLaren/Orr

When everyones healthy (key word when) then Mclaren and Orr will rotate, one will sit and the other will play.

Komorov-Mcclement-Orr/Mclaren

What would the 4th line look like in the playoffs if the Leafs made it?

I dont think you can play Mclaren//Orr though

which means now all you have is Steckel McClement and Komarov, but you have 2 centres (technically 3 because Komarov is originally a C but thats not a big issue)

I absolutely think you can play McLaren in the playoffs, Orr maybe not, but McLaren is a good 4th liner. He can skate, has Some hockey skills, and is a good forechecker and cycler

Deal Steckel for whatever pick we could get in return.

Shuffle McClement and Komarov between 3rd line LW and 4th line C.

Play only one of Orr/Mclaren against non-fighting teams. Play both against times like the Bruins.

Call up Colborne in the event of injuries to get him some NHL exposure to help his develoment.

I think this is precisely what is going to happen.

The lineup will be something like this: (IMO)

Lupul - Bozak - Kessel
JVR - Grabovski - Kulemin
MacArthur - Kadri - Frattin
Komarov - McClement - Orr (absolutely LOVE this fourth line)

Really like that lineup. Going to give teams fits. Down the stretch that group will be menacing.

The 4th line will be pretty safe and will really wear down teams. The 3rd line will continue to catch teams off guard due to the disparity of matchups and the top 6 is absolutely deadly. Bozak is maybe the only weak link there but then again he wins Faceoffs and is good defensively, so it balances out.

I think the Leafs are going to be a force as the season wears on.
