Just throwing this out there ... but we could have 3 players in the running for the Calder next year.

If Holtby gets taken in the ED to Seattle, dipietro, Rathbone and Podkolzin could all be in the mix.

Rathbone has looked great in his one game, and if Virtanen had the cerebral powers of Rathboner, he would be a valuable player.

Anyhow, those 3 and Juolevi should be regulars next year, or JB and TG should be gone. Heck, they should be gone anyways ....
How is Dipietro going to be in the running? In the 10% chance he is our backup he will only play 25 games

Jack Rathbone is remarkable when it comes to knocking down pucks and holding the zone......has the quickest stick I've seen on the Canuck blueline in a lot of years. And he gets his shots through with a ton of pace on them. He's going to be a point-producing machine from the back end.

It's almost unfathomable that he hasn't been in the lineup from the start of the season. Somebody in the Canucks braintrust or coaching staff should be either regretful or embarrassed...or both.

Could be worse he could be in LA while Toffoli is in Montreal and Madden injured or struggling in Utica. Happy we have him if he works out as top 4 a lot of the d questions are answered.

its the coach and only the coach. management provides the players, but in the end the coach is the one who selects the roster for the game, not management.

Lockwood looks like a player to me. A pk and 4th line puck pursuit specialist. Similiar to Motte but with less offensive history. Maybe can become like Motte or Tanev on Pittsburgh. He has stayed healthy which was a big concern.

Hey all, tomorrow will likely be the last update to the OP. The news that Benning is back for another year is too much to take so I'll be stepping away for a bit for the sake of my sanity. You'll probably see me online here and there and I may even make a post or two but I don't want to stay tied to a big project until next season starts and I'm desperate enough for hockey to once again cheer for this team of ours.

Thanks for all the likes and for helping me with info about our prospects!

So just looking at the prospects and the roster next year.

locks for next year: Podkolzin. Rathbone
high chance of cracking roster: Lockwood, Dipietro(based on holtby buy-out or expansion pick)
if they have a good offseason: Gadjovich(skating)
will see NHL games at some point next year: Woo, Costmar (assuming elc and ahl)
biggest camp surprise: Costmar
disappointment: Lind
"prospects" on their way out: Rafferty, Michaelis, Jasek

I'll be back. You'll probably see me here around the draft and through the first weeks of free agency. I just don't have it in me to stay as in touch as I otherwise might have if this team seemed set to change up the front office.

Am I missing something? What suggests Costmar will get NHL games next year? I admit I haven't followed him at all so just curious.

basically projects to be a 3c/4c. had a good wjc and did alright as a 19yr old in shl before injury(believe he was playing regularly on a horrible team).
assuming he signs elc, he would start in Abbotsford and most likely get a look during the year as our 3c and 4c are horrible/old.
although with most swedes in the shl, they dont come over unless the have a shot at NHL roster. so its possible he stays another year or they force him on roster if shows well enough

Looking at that Canuck prospect list, the Canucks desperately need a strong 2021 draft. Fortunately most of the kids in our wheelhouse are either d-men, centers or left-wingers.

So if nothing else, the prospect pool should be have a lot more depth after this summer' draft.

Pass it to Bulis has a review of Canucks prospect depth, position-by-position. People will disagree with some of the evaluations, inevitably, but it's a useful review and an update on the seasons of some of the more obscure prospects.

How deep is the Canucks’ prospect pool at each position? - Vancouver Is Awesome

it's a useful sorted list. as of right now, the canucks have harvested most of the sure things in their prospect pool. i would say rathbone and juolevi are harvested and demonstrably nhl guys now (whether or not the canucks want juolevi).

aside from them, pods, woo and de pietro are still pure prospects with plenty of upside. but the other guys on that list are either longshots or guys who are most likely going to have to be roleplayers and lower their sights to bottom six/bottom pair aspirations.

which is to say, i am not giving up on a guy like kole lind breaking through, but he is now a longshot to do it.

i am not that panicked. we are missing two high picks from last year so the list looks weak just now. if they trade the 1st or 2nd for this season i will become concerned.

The prospect pool is as bad I've ever seen it in my 3 decades or so following the team.
2012? or was Gaunce enough to save that year? Between Hodson and Horvat was bare. The odd signing like Tanav. Our prospect pool is down because so many are already here and playing.

Circa 2012 is the only time it's been in this neighborhood. But we'd traded a pile of picks to try and win a Cup and had drafted 29th overall for several straight years.

To be a 25th place team with this sort of farm system is ... not ideal. Once Podkolzin debuts it could be years before another notable prospect joins this team.

It was as bad as this in about 2001, probably worse really. This particular list left off Bieksa who (along with the soon to be pissed away UMberger) was actually our best prospect at the time. It's still ugly if you add Bieksa: 2001-02 Canucks Preview of Ranked Prospects - Hockey's Future (hockeysfuture.com)

in no way do we have one of our worst prospect pools. overall depth? maybe.
first this write-up was done after the draft(why umberger was there) so they couldnt include prospects that had graduated. so youd be either looking to include the upcoming draft picks or go back to the start of the season and include hoglander etc.
even if we cut hoglander, and juolevi it still leaves us with rathbone, dipeitro who are still considered prospects even though they were with the team for a longer time.
theres no way we are worse.

looking at that link and what we have now.

bieksa - woo (top 4 rd)
umberger - 1st 2021 (umberger was just drafted when that list was created so ill put it as a comparable)
auld- dipietro (back-up, with starter hype)
chubarov - costmar (3rd/4th c)
fedorov - kunz (interesting but flaws)
vyrdaney - breeeesbois (dman who wont contribute to canucks)
reid- lind (interesting but prob fizzle out)
bell - karlsson(never gonna see either)
holden - jasek (2 players done with the canucks that capped out in ahl)
smith - zlodeyev (two players who had rumblings after draft, but project as 3rd liners if that)
komarniski - rafferty (2 high scoring d who will be gone)

still leaves us rathbone, podz, gadj, focht, this years draft class besides the 1st who dont match up with prospects we had back then.

yes i realize holden and smith were higher draft picks but they were always predicted as 3rd liners, so thats why i matched them with similar
