The 2-PER-DECADE DRAFT
69708604-pair-of-ice-hockey-skates-isolated-on-white-background-.jpg
10 days of double picks (2 picks per day any time after 7 a.m. Pacific; 10 a.m. Eastern).

Draft 12 F, 6 D, 2 G from the 20th century.

The kicker: ONLY TWO players from each decade are to be selected (a player who played in part of 5 seasons in any 0 to 9 decade - e.g., 1930-1939 - qualifies).

Day 11 is Voting Day.

Day 12 is the semi-final.

Day 13 is Voting Day.

Day 14 is the championship final.

Then we cheerfully herald in the new year! (er, with masks on, socially distanced, windows open for circulation, attendance optional.)

OTHER RULES:

No 1890s, 2000s, 2010s. Let's keep this simple and elegant. A full 20-player squad representing 2 players from every decade of the 20th century.

A GM can claim (when picking) a player representing ANY decade in which they played part of 5 seasons (decade from Jan 1st 00 to Dec 31st 09). But you MUST indicate which decade when you pick and stick with it.

Only one of the Big Four can be drafted per team on DAY 1.

That's it. All the groundrules.

Now let's have a good draft! :)

Remember: simply make up any picks you may have skipped the next day (go zero one day, four the next, if you are in a holiday crunch, though it is a quick and relatively easy draft, so 5 to 10 minutes a day is all that's needed - you're likely to think about options in your head when offline anyways!)

Let's assume a player learns more from experience, so he probably brings intangibles with age: a veteran advantage (tiebreaker).

Gretzky is 1980's.
Howe is 1950's (he won 5 of his 6 Harts that decade).
Roy & Forsberg are 1990's.
Dionne is 1980's.
Good idea to get as many of these out-of-the-way as possible, before people start picking. I'd strongly encourage other participants to bring up as many borderline cases as possible NOW, so that any potential controversies are averted. Another case-in-point: I guess we're going to say Lidström belongs to the next century and is thus excluded from being drafted(?) Then there's 'Gros Bil.'
1950s: AS 1,1,1,1,2, 3x Hart Finalist, 1 Hart.
1960s: AS 1,2,2,2, 4x Hart Finalist, 1 Hart.
Messier's classification might hinge on whether you count his 89-90 season as the last season of the eighties, OR the first season of the 90s. Larry Robinson sits on a comparable edge- one decade earlier.

Then there's Bill Cook- I have no dog in the fight, but one could, I think, at least make a case that he was stronger, relative to his peers, in the 20s in Saskatoon than he was in the 30s for the Rangers. [I believe it's been comfortably established that the Western League of that day was at least as strong as the NHA.]

Unfortunately, I don't think I could draft at the pace expected to make this come off- but I'll tune in, if for no other reason that to see what the eighth-most-desirable player from the decade 1900-1909 looks like.

Edit: before I go, I think I'd like to hear the reasoning behind classifying Dionne as belonging to the 80s. If we're counting 79-80 as part of the 80s, I can see it (if barely).

There should be ONE RESTRICTION:

No team could have more than one of "The Big Four" greatest players of all time (Howe, Orr, Gretzky, Lemieux). Day one at 7:01 a.m. Eastern could be a dogfight, but at most ONE of those four could be drafted per team on Day One (for competitiveness' sake). I hope everyone understands and agrees it makes sense.

The 5th greatest player of all time is VERY CONTESTED. So, if you draft two players as the 5th GM to pick (due to coming late), you may not get a consensus top 4 player but you could get the 5th & 6th ... or... 11th & 12th.... depending on opinion.

(I, as administrator, will not pick until 15 minutes after the draft clock begins on Day 1.)

The draft clock begins at 10am eastern, 7pm pacific every day. Many days you can pick any time during the day, but for Day One you want to be there.

So there is no draft order? It's just a race to see who can post their picks first?
We have done this before.

After day one, opinions vary!

Roy or Hasek?
Nighbor or Clarke?
Sakic or Yzerman?
Schmidt or Boucher?
Kurri or Bossy?

If you don't like the premise, sit back and watch.

No need to get defensive about me getting defensive.

I put a lot of work/time into this. More time than work 'cuz it's fun! :) Let's rock 'n roll!

I may have to back out. I completely understand if we’re going with the “rush to pick” format instead of a straight draft order but my work schedule makes that pretty tough to compete. I wouldn’t be online until hours into the clock starting each day. I misunderstood the pick format. I’ll follow along though!

I'll pick at the end of day one.

There are so many equivalent value options after day one. Timing won't be as important with only a few GMs and 2 picks at a time.

Is Messier & Kelly better or worse than Lafleur & Lidstrom or 2 picks of Jagr & Shore?

Team building chemistry will be the difference. Everyone will have great line-ups!

Pick when it's convenient. No waiting. We did this years ago and it worked like a charm. It's a more relaxed fun draft.
