The “best player” on the Canucks has been a different player each of the past five seasons

2018/2019 - Elias Pettersson
2017/2018 - Brock Boeser
2016/2017 - Bo Horvat
2015/2016 - Daniel Sedin
2014/2015 - Henrik Sedin

What’s the longest streak you can think of in which a team has had a different “best player” each year without any repeats?

San Jose has had a lot of different players step up lately

2018-2019 - Kane or Karlsson
2017-2018 - Couture
2016-2017 - Burns
2015-2016 - Thornton
2014-2015 - Pavelski
2013-2014 - Marleau taking into account playoffs (Pavelski had a better season)

I feel like it'd be prudent to wait a bit longer than 2 games until deciding that Elias Pettersson is the best player on Canucks this season.

especially when both guys from the previous two years on your list are still around and in their early 20s

2017-2018: Marner
2016-2017: Matthews
2015-2016: Kadri
2014-2015: Kessel

Big block of Kessel in the years before that.

Like the poster above said, this is very opinionated. For example Voodoo thinks Marner was their best player last year, but as a outside fan looking in, I always thought Matthews was the best.

2017-2018 - Hall

2016-2017 - Palmieri

2015-2016 - Schneider

2014-2015 - Henrique

2013-2014 - Jagr

2012-2013 - Kovalchuck

2011-2012 - Brodeur

2010-2011 - Elias

2009-2010 - Parise

Something like this. Sure one can argue that Schneider/Brodeur were best player for more than one season, but the big picture is that when you go through a thorough rebuild and tou lose you top forwards (Parise, Kovy), this is what it looks like.

It's definitely close, and I'd be a fool to say that Marner > Matthews at their full powers, but he led the team in scoring after a sizzling second half and went over PPG against the Bruins in the playoffs, while Matthews missed time with injury and was contained against the B's.

And as much as I love Marner I don't expect it to happen again.

Conversely, an argument in 2015-2016 could be made for Leo Komarov as the Leafs best player that year...
