The people complaining about Gardiner are not the same ones complaining about Barrie. I loved Gardiner. He was actually competent defensively. Completely different players.

Disagree with that. I spent nearly 4 years on here defending Gardiner (I'm guessing half my posts were about Gardiner) and I can see almost all the same people that complained about Gardiner are also complaining about Barrie .

I also think pre-injury Gardiner was clearly better than Barrie too defensively and possession-wise. For the record, I also think Barrie needs to improve defensively to be on this team. I'm not saying he's been great defensively, he's below-average. But that's the case for the majority of offensive D. Heck, Rielly is an offensive defenseman who's only average defensively.

Barrie is worse than below average. In fact, I don’t think I can name 5 dman worse defensively than Barrie... that is how bad he is defensively.

Really impressive that you've watched all 120 top-4 defensemen play to make that sort of statement :sarcasm:

Either he dropped off massively magically when he came to Toronto, or he's not as bad defensively as other offensive D-men as you think.

As I said, I was a big Gardiner fan and he was better defensively clearly. No one is arguing that.

So then can you stop with these Gardiner comparisons...? :p

There is not much comparable between the two, really. And i disagree with your premise that the same people criticizing Gardiner are the same people criticizing Barrie. Barrie is much worse....

The same thing was said for Gardiner (I disagreed, as Gardiner's fan).
The same thing was said for Krug.
The same thing was said for Rielly.
The same thing was said for Karlsson.
The list goes on.

Barrie's below average defensively, but to say he's completely incompetent is very silly.

Don't you remember how 95% of Leafs fans last year thought Gardiner was the worst by far defensive player in the league?
How was that fact measured?

There is a huge comparable between the two, and that's the fact they were both called/labelled the worst defensive players in the league by Leaf fans. I'm convinced that if Makar came here, the same thing would occur.

I'll leave it at that

Anyone catch that bit during intermission last night where Poulin was trying to insert Sandin's name into trade speculation and McKenzie just shut him down. Saying that Sandin, Liljegren and Robertson are "untouchable".

Pretty funny bit.
Thought what he said was correct.
Didn't he say something like "Sandin would be one of the 1st players other teams would ask for." ?
Mackenzie was also correct that the Leafs would not think about moving him.

That was what we need going forward a TEAM game. No one really stood out. But everyone did their part. I can't think of another game this year where I thought that. That is a winning formula.

Our defense gets so much better with adding Muzz back. It is night and day better with Muzz in lineup. and Sandin wow that was some great rook hockey. He replaced Rielly. Well you know I am not a fan of Ceci but I have to admit last night he played well. and I am a big fan of Dermy but last night he was clearly our weakest link. But again he is a heavy learning mode right now.

Steady freddy back. I think so. He did struggle a little early but that 10 beller in the 2nd really energized the team.

4 lines all contributing. Wow that was great to see. I find it very interesting that everyone seems to bash Tavares. Folks he was never fast. In fact he has always been slow. But what always amazes me about JT is how his linemates always look great with him. Now I wonder how that works?????????????????? All of a sudden Willy looks like an all-star. And last night Kerfoot plays his best game as a Leaf. What everyone misses is just how strong JT is on the puck.

But the guy who I completely missed on was Engval. This guy is a player. I think someone mentioned it. He can play anywhere. But now I can see why Keefe wants to give him a shot a centre. He looks so much better at NHL level then AHL. Every once in a while that occurs. Not often but it appears that way with Engval.

Just throwing this out there ... could it be playing with the best, and more intellectual players means he doesn't have to dumb down his game?

I know it isn't just me, because I've read it several times, he looks like he possess great HIQ.

I don't know maybe. I have seen him have flashes with Marlies too but he could never sustain it. Maybe he is just coming into his own now. I can't remember him having a bad game with leafs yet. and last night well might have been his best. Got to give someone a huge KUDOS for bringing him here. and now Keefe for giving him his shot at centre. With Mik and Engval we really picked up 2 players. and if Sandin can replicate his game from last night maybe we are in better shape than I thought on defense. Hard to say though because the Preds did not play a physical game against us and they are a slow team to begin with. Dallas will be a better test.

Muzzin was huge for the Leafs. 22 min and lots of won puck battles and clean zone exits.

I find it crazy how so many people around get so carried away when we lose a few games and everything becomes doom and gloom. It was clear imo how much this team was missing Muzzin's stabilizing presence on the backend. Our struggles directly coincided with his injury. Losing Rielly just compounded it.

None of this is to say we don't have areas of concern. Where we need to improve or possibly even seek out help.
