Was Lemaire playing C in 71? If so, then the Habs could roll out:

Beliveau
H. Richard
Lemaire
Pete Mahovlich

Granted, both Beliveau and Richard were near or at the end of their careers, but that is still 3 HOH Centre’s and Mahovlich was no slouch either.

I'll take the 02 centers and the Calgary example over the 48 Leaf sample 8 days a week.

Also the Wayne/Mark (and anyone) and Crosby/Malkin/Stall sets as well.

Goring wasn't top 10 but Trottier/Goring was a very solid reg/playoff 1/2 punch

There is no way Detroit's 2002 centres were better than Toronto's 1948 centres, other than possibly in name value (and even that is a stretch). Neither Datsyuk or Larionov was close to playing at their prime level, Draper is just a far lower level of player, and Fedorov was even slightly past his best. While none of Toronto's centres were at their best during that year, they were still closer than Detroit's centres were.

1970-71 Jacques Lemaire was primarily a LW. At the start of the season the Canadiens still Had Ralph Backstrom plus youngsters like Fran Huck, Larry Pleau and Bobby Sheehan around to play center as well.Beliveau and Richard missed time,P. Mahovlich emerged Backstrom was traded in a deal that eventually brought Lafleur to Montreal.

In th playoffs Lemaire played mainly LW, scoring the momentum shifting goal in game 7 of the finals from that position.

BTW Pete Mahovlich initially played LW with the Canadiens on a line with Beliveau at times.
