1961 and 1965 seem to have great players.

1961 - Wayne Gretzky, Mark Messier, Denis Savard, Paul Coffey, Larry Murphy

1965 - Mario Lemieux, Steve Yzerman, Pat Lafontaine, Cam Neely, Patrick Roy

The players from my birth year, which is neither of those, suck.

1951, my birth year, chiefly means a cup for the Leafs and the disappearance of Bill Barilko. Cue 50 Mission Cap, Mr. D. J!

But the 51 hockey team would have some great forwards.
The first line would be an alternate universe French Connection,
Rick Martin - Marcel Dionne - Guy Lafleur
There would be lots of other good forwards such as Steve Vickers, Craig Ramsay and Rick Kehoe

The blueline would be headed by Hall of Famer Larry Robinson and steady Bill Hajt, though it would drop off steeply in quality from there.

The problem would be in the nets, John Garrett and Curt Ridley.

Those forwards would have to score a lot of goals!

Nice thread idea.

Team 1978... not the greatest, very European:

Ollie Jokinen - Datsyuk - Dainius Zubrus
JP Dumont - Samsonov - Erik Cole
Marco Sturm - Horcoff - Huselius
Matt Cooke (yuck) - Mike York - Dan Cleary

Tomas Kaberle (woohoo) - Andrei Markov
Phillips - Morris
Sarich - Rosival

Niklas Backstrom
David Aebischer

Meh (aside from Datsyuk, one of my all time faves, and Kabby, of course)

1982 (holy ERGH....)

Gaborik - Plekanec - Pominville
Cammalleri - Boyes - Hartnell
Vermette - Umberger - Penner
Frolov - Stoll - Clowe

Hamhuis - Ehrhoff
Andy Greene - Z. Mikalek
N. Schultz - Ballard

Lundqvist - Rinne

(I think the goaltending would be the only thing worthwhile on THIS team... Maybe a bit of offense...)

Lemieux and Roy were born on the exact same day, October 5, 1965 - Just a 3-hour drive away from each other.

Nash E. Staal Vanek
Parise Pavelski Steen
Backes Kesler D. Brown
Boyle Filppula F. Nielsen

Enstrom Girardi
Boychuk Garrison
Ericsson Gorges

Fleury

Forwards and goalies look solid. The defence.... isn't quite as good.

This is my year too . . . I knew I was the same age as Lindros so it's a great start . . . but didn't realise that Kovalev was there too! What a surprise, thought he was older. With Forsberg and prime Yashin . . . is there a better centre core?

We're a contender, for sure.
