Bryan Rust would be a good defensive role player for Team USA on the PK and line 4, in addition to his offensive skills (currently 41 GP, 16 G, 15 A).

Larkin has no business being a lock, especially over Hughes.

Not talking about Rust specifically, but...

We should be taking zero "defensive role players". Take the best players, period, and fill roles with them.

I think there are going to be some interesting debates when it comes to building this team:

* Do they take one or both Tkachuk brothers?
* What is the status of guys like Pacioretty, Wheeler, and Gaudreau?
* Will they bring in some new guard like Guentzel, DeBrincat, and J. Hughes?
* Do they trust a guy like Q. Hughes on the back end?

Agreed, some very tough decisions.
Matthew Tkachuk has would appear a lock, but has had a tough year. Brady talented but so young.
Pacioretty has played his way on I believe, so clutch. Wheeler & Gaudreau I think are on the outside looking in right now.
I think Guentzel & Debrincat have to be in.
Both Hughes are tbd.

It's only somewhat relevant to 2022, but it's exciting to see how many young goalies we have showing so well this season:
  • Thatcher Demo
  • Jake Oettinger
  • Alex Nedeljkovic
  • Jeremy Swayman
  • Calvin Petersen
Not to mention Hellebyuck and Gibson are still relatively young at 27, Campbell is excelling in his first extended NHL opportunity, and Spencer Knight is our best goalie prospect in a long time.

Goalies are fickle and in no way, shape, or form are all these guys going to pan out, but they've shown enough to make us excited for a potential era of goalie depth we've never had before.

Yes USA goalies have really come on & I am amazed at how much depth we have at right hand defenseman; we are actually light from the left side. Fox & McAvoy are elite ... then add Jones, Carlson & Petry. That’s 5 legit workhorses on right side. The left side is Slavin & ......

I just keep considering how to build the most well rounded, balanced & flexible team ... so many options. Today I’d go:
Tkachuk - Matthews - Boeser
Pacioretty - Eichel - Guentzel
Debrincat - Miller - Kane
Connor - Larkin - Wheeler
Pavelski

McDonagh - Carlson
Slavin - Fox
Werenski - McAvoy
Hughes or Petry

Hellebuyck
Gibson
Demko

Shameless Penguin homer checking back in...

Why no love for Bryan Rust? He's like PPG over the past 2 seasons and is an excellent PKer (we don't play him there anymore as he's too important, but on the Olympics he'd be excellent).

Team USA has the most depth up front it's ever had. Rust is definitely in contention.

I do love Rust, in fact I had him until I saw he did not play the pk anymore, so good knowing he used to. Put him in for Wheeler maybe ?

He used to play when he was still a 3rd liner. Now that he is arguably our best winger we save him from there.

I think Rust-Guentzel could play well as a winger pairing with Eichel or Hughes - assuming he continues to add about 10 lbs - as a center.

It’s funny, Matthews slots in perfectly with Kane & either Debrincat or Tkachuk .... but then every other elite wing combo all fit perfectly with Eichel ...
Boeser - Miller ... check
Guentzel - Rust .... check
The Tkachuk boys ..... check
Connor - Wheeler .... check

.... wish we could clone Eichel a few times.
