The problem in most lists i see with AO.
For me at least 3 more forwards (wingers) are more valuable then AO (3 more from ATAS2000 list), especially what has he showed in all international games. The only good tournament i remember from him is from 2008, where he had already established chemistry with Fedorov and Semin otherwise he was very average at best.
Those 3 wingers are Radulov, Gusev and Dadonov. Gurianov i dont know/see much, maybe even him.
I see this pattern in thinking. Throw 3 big names and magic will happen. Like make line AO-Malkin-Kucherov. I think AO was tried with Malkin and it just didnt work.
Wingers i mentioned already showed great chemistry in some line combinations and are high iq players.
AO could be brought like PP specialist and maybe tried in line with 2 workers that will hustle for him, are defensively responsible and can contribute on offense. I always wanted to tried him with Andronov and Telegin type of players.
Can someone show me one tournament after 2008 when AO was contributing in meaningful way?
That is just blind haterism. You just seem to erase every positive contribution of Ovechkin from memory.

I welcome feedback on this lineup, I don't know the recent Team Russia history / international performance very well.

Panarin - Shipachyov - Kucherov
Kaprizov - Malkin - Svechnikov
Ovechkin - Morozov - Radulov
Gurianov - Voronkov - Nichushkin
Gusev

Provorov - Orlov
Sergachev - Romanov
Gavrikov - Zaitsev
Zub

Vasilevskiy
Shestyorkin
Khudobin

The one guy that I really don't know if he'll be ready by then is Morozov. I feel more confident Voronkov could walk into a 4th line checking role and do really well, even now maybe. He does so many things well.

Ov Steamrolls Jagr!
The only truly elite Center on this team (Malkin) should really be playing with the best winger (Kucherov), especially since they have looked good playing together before on the same line (eg. World Cup):

Panarin-Malkin-Kucherov
Kaprizov-Shipachyov-Svechnikov
Ovechkin-Barbashyov-Tarasenko
Mikheyev-Namestnikov-Guryanov
Buchnevich

Provorov-Sergachyov
Orlov-Gavrikov
Zadorov-Zaitsev
Romanov

Vasilevsky
Shetyorkin
Bobrovsky

The 2018 Worlds is a great example of a typical stubborn Russian coach ignoring this basic principle, playing Malkin with table scraps like Grigorenko and having his all-star team fail against lesser competition as a result. And please, nobody suggest Ovechkin-Malkin on the same line again, they are like oil and water together.

This would be a tremendous line, would also be Russia's only truly elite line due to their lack of top line Centers after Malkin. The top 9 wingers are solid enough.

They got Shipachov and Grigorenko as solid no. 3 and 4 center if necessary. They don't die if they have to use Namestnikov or Radulov as second center. Maybe even Buchnevich can play center. Usually wingers doesn't SLEEP during "how to play centre" classes.

But if MALKIN breaks down...

It would not be Grigorenko. He isn't a center.
I dont think it'll be Namestnikov either, although he has a better chance.

They will most likely go with centers that are stronger defensively. Plenty of those options, both in KHL and NHL.

It's not a great situation at center, but it's not a desperate one either. No reason to resort to drastic measures.

Lots of terrific wingers. In the middle, not so much.

Ivan Morozov, Dmitry Voronkov and Georgi Ivanov are 3 sleeper centers. All 3 have made strides and seem to be on the verge of breaking out.

Dronov is similar on defense.

Russia has not made a splash at a Best on Best event in a LONG time. With this being Ovi and Malkin last kick at the can, I would not be surprised to see Russia perform to the upside. Motivation and all that.

Guys like Kaprizov and Panarin can elevate any center... I'd put them on separate lines, and NOT with Malkin.

Spreading talent to different lines has a drawback also.

It's not equal ice time between lines. Someone will spend less time on the ice.

I don't think that's necessary. I can live with a Tarasenko-Barbashev-Buchnevich 4th line.

Should the Russian coach tell Ovechkin to work on his face offs? I’m not suggesting he play center, but he could take them on his line and then you put one of your stronger defensive players among the scoring wingers at center. It’s hard to believe someone like him that’s as physically strong as he is and as elite at what he does best couldn’t work on them for six months and become 45% on face offs.

Then you could run out something like this.

Panarin-Malkin-Tarasenko
Kaprizov-Shipachyov-Kucherov
Ovechkin-Buchnevich-Svechnikov
Nichushkin-Barbashev-Dadonov
Namestnikov

Not great, but better than having players like Namestnikov, Anisimov, Grigorenko in a regular lineup role.

Panarin seems to be out of Team Russia anyway, which is a shame. He would've been one of the team's best players for sure. Not his fault though.

Sorokin putting on a clinic in the NHL playoffs so far. He has put Varlamov out of a job. Will it be enough to grab the backup spot behind Vasilevsky?
