U18: Canada to face Czechs for gold

http://www.tsn.ca/canadian_hockey/news_story.asp?id=133383

Canada's under-18 men's hockey team finds itself in familiar territory - playing for a world championship gold medal.

Canada advanced to the final of the under-18 Junior World Cup hockey tournament Saturday with a 3-2 semifinal victory over Finland. The Canadians will face the Czech Republic in the final.

Why does the US team often suck at this tournament? Is their whole U18 program geared to the IIHF WC?

I really don't think this is considered as a tournament where you win "a gold medal" and for sure you don't win a World Championship. For European nations it's the biggest tournament for preparing to the U18 Worlds, but also a one held in a pre-season.

But still, obviously a good performance from Canada.

Simply because their better players do not attend. Those who have made the NTDP do not participate in this event.
