I'm almost 100% certain that the issues with Stamkos is that he feels the need to be an "all around player". I mean thats not a bad thing but its not what makes him a threat. He needs to be completely focused on shooting and scoring goals and playing selfish. I know that sounds wrong but what makes him dangerous is when he is shooting. Maybe its because he's the captain and feels like he needs to be that all around type of guy or maybe its a coaching thing (probably a mix of both) but I really just want to seem him play selfishly when he's out there. We saw glimpses of it in round 3 vs the caps and this is why i'm almost convinced that its a mental thing or coaching thing with him. We've seen that he can still be the "old stammer" when he wants to, now its just a matter of getting him into that mentality 24/7.

Did Namestnikov played center at some point in Tampa? I feel like this guy still havent reach his full potential, he's so smart on the ice.
I wonder what's coming for him this summer.

He was much more successful on wing but he was drafted as a C and played every year primarily as a C until this year.

Howden made the NYR final roster. He beat out 2017 #7OA Lias Anderson who got sent to AHL. That probably says more about the NYR depth than Howden, but good for him. Hajek had a good camp but got sent down. Also, DeAngelo made the final cut.

Makes sense. I think Howden winds up their best piece from that trade. Not sure how he'll do in his rookie year, but I wouldn't be shocked if he outscores Namestnikov.

I was upset with the loss of Howden. Was our closest thing to a true 2-way center with size. Cirelli stepping in and doing what he did last year has taken some of the edge off of that loss though, good for Brett.

It's not like they got hosed in the deal, those 2 were pretty much surefire NHLer's, Hajek with more upside.

Some Ottawa fan was trying to tell me that most of the pieces in the Karlsson trade were better than Howden and Hajek.

The only loss with Howden is his size, neither Cirelli and Stephens have that who are the two guys he'd be competing with for 3/4C job the next few years. Cirelli kinda fits our lineup better because he's faster and a better skater to play the style Cooper wants. Stephens plays a heavy game that Howden doesn't even play, Howden is bigger and uses his size well but isn't a grinder so wouldn't work as well if he had to be on the 4th line. With non 1st rounders like Cirelli, Volkov, Joseph, Raddysh and Katchouk looking all NHL quality we had the depth to move a forward prospect and not be hurt going forward.

Cirelli takes some of the sting off of the loss of Howden, but I think some of you are forgetting what a boon it is to have a scoring line center with size and faceoff winning ability. None of the other guys you mentioned have those special combination of skills...although Howden may not make it as scoring liner.

How do we know Howden can win faceoffs in the NHL?

He would still be years away from being a top-six player with us, if ever. Nobody's cracking our t6 centers for a while.

I agree with both of you, I was making a nuanced point about the state of our faceoff abilities and the size of our centers, not on the likelihood of Howden in particular making an immediate difference.

I don't know that size and faceoffs are all that related though. I think Point is going to wind up our faceoff specialist over time. Seems like a kid driven to be good at absolutely everything.

From there we have Johnson, who may or may not play out his contract with us, Cirelli, and Paquette, for NHL centers. It'll be interesting to see if we go out of our way to load up on centers with size in the 2019 draft though. Seems like every year, at least with Yzerman, we'd lean toward one player type/position, and go there if all else was equal.

I didn't mention size as a means for which centers gain a faceoff advantage, although it obviously helps. I mention size and faceoff prowess in the same breath because together, they give your team a massive puck possession advantage almost by default.

Point is a freak, in our current set up he is definitely our best 2-way center and face off specialist.
