Not really a fan of this trade, got older and smaller, Huntington has looked decent so far this year. figured if anything he would be packaged with someone for a depth piece

Hasn't the team added salary with both moves today?
Not really.

If CapFriendly is accurate, Felhaber, Lipanov, and Huntington were all making 70k this season. Anthony Richard is making 100k.

Felhaber's cap hit would be higher than Lipanov's, but Richard's is lower than Huntington's. In the scheme of things, it's nearly the same money.

I think JBB is just bored from having no cap space to do anything significant. Just doesn't want his pen ink dry up, and his phone being covered in dust.

Syracuse is 15-15-3 this season. Huntington and Lipanov are both in the last year of their ELCs and haven't really done anything to suggest they're on the up. Seems like they tried to shake things up in Syracuse while giving Huntington and Lipanov another chance with new teams.

I'll defend Lipanov a bit in that he was injured for a significant portion of this season.

But I didn't see a super high ceiling on him, either.

the verhaeghe move was pretty random back in the day as well. You might as well see if you can unlock some hidden potential in these guys

It also addresses the needs of the minor league affiliates, and while making trades is a tough part of the business, it gives these guys another chance within the same timeframe to see if they fit somewhere.

They could stay on the track of heading towards no QO in the TB pipeline, and wait until October (or who knows when) for the next season. They could also see if there's a fit in another organization, before they lock themselves in with a contract.

A lot of guys who don't get QOs sign deals in the minors or Europe next, so getting half a season with another NHL organization is a decent shot.

Richard may well be the fastest skater on the Crunch. He has a SERIOUS set of wheels and good hockey sense. He has played well with whomever he has been skating with so far, it is just taking his new team a bit to get used to this kid's speed. May well be a case of trading players who needed a new view of hockey. That being typed, as much as I liked Huntington, Richard fits the Tampa Bay play style much better so far.
