Hall is such a great player that ultimately I would resign him for 8 years (he is going to get 8 years). Those last few years will likely be rough, but he is a superstar player and those are difficult to come by. Ultimately I don't resign too many players at age 29 to mid to long-term deals but this is an exception.

Of course, but that isn’t the point in regards to whether we should pay Hall or not.

If we don’t want to pay Hall we should not have traded for Subban and instead kept building young.

Once they added Subban you knew they were doing anything reasonable that might impress Hall. No question they want to sign him and I’d be shocked if Shero doesn’t offe something fair. Hopefully Hall leaves a few dollars on the table.

If they just got the green light to start talking dollars and cents a few days ago then I don't think it's reasonable to have a contract signed this quickly.

Ray has day to day stuff to take care of, on top of getting both sides to agree. This will probably take a few weeks at least.
I forget who said it, but I believe it was another GM. Something along the lines of, when two parties actually want to make a deal and sit down and talk numbers, it takes no time at all, less than a couple hours to hash things out. It's all about getting together and sitting down and both people saying, "ok let's figure out how to get this done."

I'm sure it can, but not when you're talking about eight figures and nearly a decade of term. There is a ton of structure that needs to be determined.

Well that is where a couple hours come in. They both know the term length, so they can say "9" no "12" no "10" no "11" then both say "fine 10.5," over the course of a half hour and then once that is agreed upon, they are both on the same page and use the next 2 hours or so to hash out the details.

It really doesn't seem that hard. Taylor Hall is a star player so determining a no-trade/no-move structure should be very simple - if he wants the full no-move, maybe he gives up a little money in the deal, but otherwise it seems like a very simple negotiation. He's a star and stars have been getting bonus-laden deals so he should get one too.

It depends how militant both sides are. If there’s room for compromise or one side just completely hands the other a win then yes a deal can get done quick, but if it’s a Lou-Lehner type negotiation where it’s a complete lowball or it’s a Marner type negotiation where the player and the agent want every last dime then it can take a while.

No one said it was going to get done before the opener once it came out they had the green light.

Some of you guys just added that idea for whatever reason. It doesn’t seem like either side is working with a set timetable

You are correct. When both sides want to get the deal done it's quick. In Hall's case it's simple, once the players starts the season without a long term deal they are assuming the risk. The reward is the UFA deal they sign in July. The fact that Hall is not signed at the begining of the season tells you he's going UFA. The fact that he's going UFA tells you he wants a max deal. It's pretty simple from here on out. Unless he gets hurt he's not signing anywhere until July 1st. Hope he changes his mind.

talk about jumping to conclusions, holy hell

do you know how many extensions for pending UFAs there have been so far this year? It isn't as many as you'd think.

All the reports from the past week or so lead to the complete opposite conclusion. I wouldn't be surprised if he signs within the next week or two.

Every team wants Hall. So he is a big trade asset for the Devils. Hall's business team knows this as do the Devils. The Devils want Hall, will they pay $11M per year for 8 years? They could drag out the negotiations and watch him play, Hall knows this so his team is pushing for a contract now at max dollars and years. So what do you do? I would pay for him now..

Define max dollars? Max term is 8 years but do you mean the largest cap hit allowed by the CBA or something else?

I'd venture a guess you're not Taylor Hall though.

I venture a guess you're right. ;)

But hopefully the Devils turn it around quickly so Hall can see that they've got the talent to make a run for the Playoffs and thus ends up signing a contract extension finally.
