Tasmania has long-been a source of quality Aussie Rules players, but the AFL has more or less dismissed their past bids for a team on account of being a fairly small and spread-out market.

That all changed recently, with the AFL approving an expansion bid to Hobart, the largest city on Tasmania, with a major infusion of AUS$240 million in federal funds to build a stadium, to boot, and the understanding of even more coming from the state government.

However, there appears to be some hiccups over the potential name, cost, and location.

The preferred name, Tasmanian Devils, has the AFL worried over potentially getting Warner Bro's legal ire. Even though it's a species that their character was based on and named after.

But hey, maybe Hobart Devils instead? Tasmanian Tigers would work, but that nickname is already taken by Richmond.

In more substantive matters, there is a lot of ire that has been raised over the flood of government funds going into this project, with protestors arguing they would be better spent on social programs.

Finally, the location by the harbor in Hobart seems nice, but only about 40% of Tasmanians live in the Hobart area; so for out of town fans that they will need to rely upon, it will be very inconvenient to get to. I think the plan is that some of their games will be in Tasmania's secondary market, Launcaston, though.
