Part of the problem with Stolarz isn't Stolarz himself but the goaltender in front of him. Starting the season with Koskinen and Stolarz would be nightmarish, you'd pretty much condemn your season from day one. Since Koskinen's contact isn't movable, you're going to have to find yourself a better back-up. That is why a draft pick is preferred. Stolarz would be fine if you had a legit starter.
Or trade Koskinen, which would be preferable.

I’ve seen the script for this many times, here is how it will play out with Stolarz.

Right now the OBC are high fiving this trade. They’ve outsmarted the rest of the league and acquired someone who was misused with great potential which the Oilers will help them reach. They’ve already got Stolarz pencilled in as the backup for next season.

The rest of the season plays out and Stolarz has played at a level that is barely NHL backup quality. The OBC is concerned but it is hard to tell if Stolarz sucks or just the whole team in general. Just in case, they make him a 1 year offer that they can bury in the minors. If it doesn’t work out they can easily acquire another backup goalie.

Stolarz’s agent senses blood in the water and counters with a contract that is higher $ or term (or both). The OBC is flummoxed. They’ve been busy making videos for Stone and Panarin and haven’t spent any time talking to UFA goalies or scouting them. Also, trying to find another goalie is a lot of work! So reluctantly they accept the contract offer. Between Koskinen and Stolarz they should have at least one capable goalie.

Now it’s halfway through the 2019-20 season and the Oilers goaltending has been a train wreck. The OBC tries to find a goalie in trade but have no cap room and no one wants to make them a good offer. No problem though! Starrett has been playing great down in the AHL. They call him up and run with three goalies because they don’t want to lose a goalie for nothing.

Starrett is starved for playing time for the rest of the season. And the cycle repeats...

If I made a list of people who I believe were responsible for the disaster that was the 17-18 season Talbot would be right behind Chiarelli. He went off the rails early and never came back. I'm sure he's a great guy/teammate/great for the culture but who cares, he was pretty much Edmonton's Cloutier in my opinion. Pretty good trade by K.G.
You're forgetting that Klefbom played hurt nearly the entire time he played and was a shadow of himself until they shut him down, and Larsson also played hurt a good proportion of the season. According to some on here, that is a good enough excuse to give the goalie for not playing well.

Saying that, glad he's gone, for his sake and ours.

I get it.. he sucks. But the players and management helped him get to this point by constantly putting **** defensive efforts and leaving a man open in the slot 90% of the time. Not to mention rarely scoring.

Look at Kostco. He was great at the start, now he is a trash goaltender as well
But apparently that's on the team, not the goalie.

I get that Talbot and Hart were tight, but Talbot is UFA, Philly could've waited.
why make the trade now?

I think they’re taking Talbot for a test drive. See if they want to invest in him for next season.

Potty mouth Stolarz-lol.

He was asked about his knees and if they were all healed up and fine.

"Oh yeah, everything is good. It was a shitty setback to have happen..."

Seems like an approachable kid and is excited for the opportunity.

Rough year for the team in front of Talbot and his play suffered. He has the ability to be better than what we've seen over the past couple years. I think he'll find his game again and hope that he does (probably not in philly though). When he was on, he was great on the ice and a good leader for the team and I wish him the best going forward.

If he arrived in Nashville broken (and couldn't find his game) and then gets shipped to Arizone where he made some progress but they didnt have the patience (or thought the return was to good to pass up) so they shipped him off to Minnesota where he finally puts it all together.

Doesnt seem all that weird to me.

This team is so absolutely atrocious defensively IMO it breaks goalies down over time. Koskinen isnt that great IMO (below average starter) and he will be next unless drastic changes happen. If drastic changes dont happen Koskinen will be gone before his contract runs out. Book it.
The D was not why he was letting in blue line shots, Devin's problems were not because of Edmonton, it just piled on him after and the shit show that was Dallas Eakins added.

I have posted a ton about this. This D and this team f***s with a goalies head. This team is toxic.

Just as Dubnyk eventually did and Brossoit after him, I fully expect Talbot to recover.
I am genuinely happy for Talbot that he was able to get out of this s*** show.

No one is wanting our scraps to clear space.

The only other way we could of cleared space is send guys down and not replace them and then we would just have 12 skaters, 6 d and no extras.

Montoya is done NHL hockey, think he is still injured too, he wasn't an option to have as a backup.

Also yeah I would of loved picks for Talbot to but you have to remember, Talbot had a 20 team NTC and he had 10 teams he could be traded too and none of them wanted him, so we had to find a team he was willing to waive for and get the best we could get. Especially with Talbots contract

In the situation this is a good trade because the other option was to do the above and let Talbot walk in the summer. This way we get a guy we can test drive for the season and if he sucks then we let him walk.

We went from nothing for next year to a maybe.
I mean to each his own, but Talbot is gone at the end of the year, and our playoff chances are over. We now have a 25 year old goalie who has been an AHL All-Star, played in back to back memorial cup championships with the London Knights, put up solid but not spectacular numbers in the AHL, and is seasoned enough to be ready for his shot at becoming an NHL goaltender. Assuming the Oilers showcase him the rest of the year, he gets a minimum 11 games here to show that he can either be Koskinen's backup next year, or become the starter. What you have to realize is that we could've sent Manning/Petrovic/Puljujarvi down to the minors to save the cap space, but that would get us just under the cap with less flexibility in the lineup.(one less player on the NHL squad and no room to call anyone up because of the cap). Also, if we don't get below the cap, we lose our first round pick, so there's that too. With how Talbot has played this year, we are in no worse shape today than we were yesterday, and now we have a 25 year old goaltender with good pedigree to showcase for the job for the last 20 games.

Meh, I don't know anything about Stolarz I guess his save percentage is good but he has not played alot of games 47 games in the AHL was the most he played. Hopefully he turns into something decent. I liked Talbot thanks for your work in Edmonton, I hope he can turns things around in Philadelphia.

Yep. Dubnyk was trash because his technique went to utter garbage. The reason Nashville and Montreal didn’t want him wasn’t “confidence”. His butterfly was laughably bad, and he was always off balance. He had to go learn head trajectory, and overhaul his game.

Ya and Stolarz’s time missed with injuries is concerning, but at the same time, it gives reason for his low numbers. We need to get him in lots of games, and see what we’ve got

plus our team is not doing well, so it's likely Talbot was as good as gone. At least we have an interesting experiment with RFA control

Fresh start for both guys. I'll admit, I expected Gretzky to have to eat half of his salary to trade him. I'm curious to see how Stolarz performs in the net in Edmonton. Hopefully, his audition goes well.

As far as Talbot goes, things didn't work out the past few years, and he could definitely use a change of scenery. I hope he does well enough in Philly to earn an extension.

Alright, I'm ready to see what Stolarz has. Koski has run his course with me. His lateral movement seems to be getting worse, not better.

People also underrate the system he's ended up in.

Corsica's expected save percentage tracking is pretty cool. It basically tallies the shooting percentage of every shot from a location then references that with the shots a goalie is facing and tells you the league average of save percentage for all the shots a goalie has faced.

Dubnyk has led the lead by a huge margin since he's got to Minnesota.

He has a .931 xSV% this season and .934 in the three seasons prior.

He didn't just magically become a great goalie after leaving Edmonton.

Koskinen has had the same d in front of him, actually he played more without klefbom in front of him as well I believe.

Hopefully a healthy Sekera adds improvement on the d for the goaltenders.

And he’s still losing now with Klef and Russell back. Excuses gone, sorry. By the end of the year his stats will actually be worse than Talbot’s. Not to worry though, only have 3 more years of it.
