Sounds totally random and off the wall but I am trying to prove a point.

Would the capitals still have won the cup if Jake Allen was their goalie and not Holtby.

Hard to say but they did have the Grubauer option so I wouldn't bet against it.

Jake Allen is the epitome of a hot and cold goalie, it really depends on what Jake you get.

The Jake that is one of the best if not the best goalie in the league or Jake AHLen that can barely stop a beachball.

Yeah. Good Jake, they still win comfortably. Bad Jake at the wrong time, and the margin of victory in the NHL is just too narrow to still have won it. You can have a strong backup like Grubauer to lean on, but if you're slotting him in because your starter has coughed up one too many bad goals...you're probably not coming back to win that. Not when things are as close as they are in today's NHL.

The Vegas run was proof positive of just how much difference a hot goaltender at the right time can make. You'd have to have a crazy dominant team to swing the difference between a good goaltender playing reasonably well, and a hot goaltender playing unbelievably good...all the way to the Cup, with any reliability.

Not in 2018 but if its for 2012-2018, than maybe.

We'd probably win it in 2017 as Holtby was brutal against the Pens, while Allen played very well that playoffs.
