That is a scary thread title to have after a concussion with this much of the season remaining.

What gives?

He's pretty much a typical tweener type player, he'll give you 40-45 points while being extremely soft and average at best defensively.

I do believe he can be an effective complimentary player on a line with a play driving centre, and the team could really use him right now with the terrible winger depth.

Goldobin / Pettersson / Boeser
Baertschi / Horvat / Virtanen

Does that matter in today's NHL? If Baertschi can produce 40-45 points (which likely means he scores 20+ goals) that's pretty good production for a skilled player at $3.36M AAV. The fact that he is 26 adds value as well. Too bad he can't stay healthy but when healthy he's a solid top 9 player to have in your lineup.

Does two-way play matter in today’s NHL? Yeah, it absolutely does....

He needs to stay healthy to score 40 points and never ever can.

It's amusing the grief Tanev gets for being injury-prone relative to the free pass Baertschi gets for being just as bad.

The contract he received this summer remains brutal.

Sorry lord and saviour, you were probably tucked in by your mom before the thread title was changed.
Oops that makes a LOT more sense. I thought it might have been changed

The problem with being "soft" is that it prevents you from scoring because you won't get into the scoring areas or work along the boards.

Sven is more than willing to work along the boards and get in front of the net. He's also surprisingly solid on his skates. When he's on his game he may not go out looking for hits but he's actually a rock, but that's when he's on his game and he's pretty streaky. I think he may be the kind of player that shows up in the playoffs rather than a player who disappears.

40-50pt guy who is average defensively is totally fine for a #6 forward, especially when at times he will look like the best player on the ice and on off nights is usually just invisible rather than outright bad.

Baertschi - Sutter - Virtanen

They played great together when Baer got demoted from Horvat’s line, they skated miles and were good defensively, Baer also potted 2 goals that game, would be a solid 3rd line for us when the teams completely healthy.

With Eriksson playing a bit better it makes sense as well. However it means Horvat is saddled carrying him and one of Granlund, Leipsic, Schaller or Rousell as the other LW.

Don't want to be alarmist but that hit that's now knocked Baertschi out for a month didn't look all that serious to me. Appeared to be more of an accidental mid-ice collision, with no penalty even being called on the play. But that's the problem with a concussion history. It takes far less of a collision each time to trigger the concussion symptoms.

Not sure what the future holds for Baertschi and the Canucks....but the concussions are a big red flag for me. And the Canucks now have a lot of replacement forwards in the pipeline.

Hoping he can return in the New Year.

I see him as potentially the next core's Brendan Morrison. Pretty average top 6er that is a benefactor of playing with good players in Horvat/Boeser/Pettersson and can put up 50-60 points in his prime. A useful left winger to have for this core going forward.
