The fact that this is even a question after where they were before the draft is wild. I’m beyond happy with Kotkaniemi but I imagine they’ll both be very good. Homer vote

They're mostly similar in usage and stats.

Kotkaniemi has better advanced stats and defensive numbers.
Svechnikov has more shots and is way more physical.

Svechnikov pretty comfortably. If everything goes right, and he backs up his hype and he becomes who he was projected to be, he will be Top 3 wingers in the game in his prime along with Marner and Lafrenier (excluding Kucherov, Kane, Ovi because of age). Also, he suppose to be good defensively as well, a lot of people compare him to Hossa for a reason. I don't see how Kotkaniemi will match Svech's production in his prime.

Svech is going to become a high-end scorer. You can see the flashes. One of those guys who the opposing team has to prepare for every night. His combination of speed, size and shot is intimidating.

Kotkaniemi is a very versatile player but personally i don't think he's going to become the same type of scoring threat. Although it'll probably be a close comparison since he plays C and brings tons to the table.

I tend to prefer the more dynamic scorer though. So Svech.

This is Kotkaniemi, rather easily.

Svechnikov has the better offensive ceiling, but even at that I’m not convinced it’s much higher. Everything else is in Kotkaniemi’s favour: age, position, defensive ability, work ethic.

They are both Franchise player with their own tools (who would complement each other really well).

- Kotka is 3-4 months younger and has the same production as Svech.
- Svech was perceived a full tier higher than Kotka, at the draft right now no specialists would say the same.
- They both played the whole season with 2nd and 3rd liners.
- They have Similar Advanced stats, but given the advance to Kotkaniemi by a slight margin.
- Really similar ice time too.

It's hard to predict at this state, but seeing the lighting fast development of KK in a full year is quite impressive and worth mentioning.

Kotka is also always where the puck is, and this is a really rare Superstar trait.

( probably biased too)

It's tongue in cheek, dude has posted in every Kotkaniemi thread about how he thinks he's overrated
It is true though, every pro Kotkaniemi argument starts with his age for some reason, even in a thread where he is THREE MONTHS younger than the other participant

Given that it’s their first year, it’s relevant to their development as 18yr olds in a man’s league. It’s relevant to the fact he’s playing a far more important position, and doing it well, too.

You won’t hear this argument after this season.

Huh? What a weird comment all around. It's not "rather easily" for either one, they are remarkably close and it could take 2-3 years to really see if one of them separates themselves. Then to bring up work ethic, which is based on nothing that I can tell.

When 2 players are close than position comes in play [at least that's what HF USUALLY claims] so give me the center over the winger.

The logic here...not saying you’re wrong but the logic is overly simplified.
It was a joke as every Kotkaniemi comparison starts with his age, even in a thread where he’s just 3 months older than the other player, his age is still brought up. Every year there’s players that make the NHL earlier and earlier with how the game is changing, and fans of these players make it seem like it’s a race to the NHL and whoever gets their first will be the better player. I’d be more impressed with Kotkaniemi putting up a huge offensive season overseas than scoring 40 points in the highest scoring NHL season in forever

This is too close. I had Svech pre-draft, but Kotka has been more impressive this year. That being said, Svech has been solid as well and I see more upside in him. If you forced my hand I don't even know what I'd do. For a playoff run this season I'd take Kotka. For the future, I'd probably lean towards Svechnikov. It's really a coinflip. I feel like Svech is a far safer bet to reach his upside, but if Kotka reaches his he'd be significantly more valuable, and while both have been impressive, neither has been mind blowing or done anything to really stand out from the other.
