'Half the league' expressed interest in Antti Suomela — so...

Goes back to relationships and reputation.

First, Sharks had their eyes on him since junior (at least 2016). Second, his agent is also Sorenson's agent. Third, Sharks reputation for handling European players (including Sorenson). Fourth, Donskoi chatted with him about team.

I read this on the Athletic this morning. Our issues with Kurz aside, these types of articles are where he really shines, IMO. Good research and good reporting.

This kind of stuff is awesome. Gotta give DW credit for the reputation he’s built.

I already liked DW Jr. after reading another really excellent article of Kurz's after DWJr was promoted to director of scouting. Jr. emphasized his plan to, basically, get their bottom-6ers for free out of Europe, and put all their draft capital into finding superstars. It's good to see that this isn't just an idea. They really have solid networks and connections for making this happen, as evidenced by their successful pursuit of Suomela.

This is part of why I’m a bit confused that they signed and didn’t call up Radil or Praplan. ON4 has mentioned before that DW does so well with European UFAs because he is always giving them opportunities here, and if they fail here, then he gives them opportunities elsewhere.

In the case of Radil and Praplan, both arguably deserved a spot in the NHL, but neither one has been given that opportunity. Hopefully they get that opportunity at some point.

Interesting approach using player agents as scouts. Hadn't heard of that before.

Who did they deserve to be in over? Other than MK68 who everyone that doesn't matter hates. It's early. like only 6 games. If a trade is made they could be on the big club before you know it. Maybe they get called up later during injuries too. There is always call ups. Team has to take as many shots as possible in finding actual NHLers. It's still based on merit. Can't only sign one or two and just expect them to do well. Sorenson didn't earn his way onto the big club right away either. Frankly they probably got luckier than they thought they would with so many Euros playing as well as they did in camp. I think for me in nearly 3 decades of watching this team, this was one of the most promising camps I can remember as far as the young players and prospects.

For some reason the Yay Shovels flashed in my mind (I can't do Photoshop) a picture of Shovels at the right(could be left) of the net and a Goalie sliding over to try to cover and Shovels has a reduced size snow shovel with pucks beings shoveled into the net with some still in the shovel and some flying into the Net. That would be an awesome Photoshop. Please someone with the skills please make it happen and if it looks good share it.

Can we tag these as Paywall or something going forward when articles are behind paywall? Thanks!

Currently, I think it is a case of the Sharks just having so many bottom-6 options...and, well, training camp. Chartier's camp probably put him over those guys.

But, if Radil and Praplan deserve NHL ice time but don't get it, I'm sure DW will move them or simply not re-sign them next season.

I’m not even saying these guys deserved a spot over anybody currently on the roster, including Melker, Gambrell, or Chartier. I would probably rather have Radil over Melker, but it’s not that big of a deal. I’m just shocked that DW didn’t try to open up a spot for those guys.

That's just not any successful team manages their roster and assets. You don't "open a spot" for rookies unless they completely outplay your vets. All things being equal PDB and most coaches would rather have some experience especially in a season where the team is clearly going all in for a cup.

Maybe I'm not understanding this argument, but the Sharks definitely make room for youngin's coming up. Spot(s) are definitely left open by not signing a vet or letting one go for the purpose of young blood coming up through the org. One; for cost savings. Two; because they have to test these kids in the Show. If they see promise in players such as Chartier or Gambrell, they'll ride it out for the season. If not they'll go hunting during the season to plug that hole for a PO ride.

My favorite overseas signing. On par with Melker and Donskoi. Actually I love overseas signings in general.

Was at the game last night, and what stood out the most about his play is that he's a faceoff winning machine!

    9/13 last night!

That's actually what all teams do. Part of the justification for the Ehrhoff deal all those years ago was to open up space to let guys like Jason Demers and Justin Braun earn a spot in the lineup. It happens frequently and it's a requirement in a cap league.
