Me too. But the post they referenced was specifically talking about the extra million the following year, so I was just giving them the benefit of the doubt that they actually read and understood the post.
I read the post; I totally spaced on next year.

Strong possibility I won’t be shocked!
Unless there is a deal to be worked out where the Sharks retain, seems like they buy him out.

Buyout costs them: $2 million in cap space in 18-19 and $1.4 million in 19-20.

His cap hit is $4.85 million. Max retention is $2.425 million. I'd imagine that the Sharks would be willing to eat the extra $400K this year to have no impact on their cap in 19-20. Basically saves them $1 million overall against the cap. Question becomes, is there a team that would want Martin at $2.425 million against the cap and $2.125 million in actual cash.

He doesn't have much of a M-NTC. Can be moved to 24 other teams. If he's on your 3rd pairing at $2.4 million is that worth it for a team?

That's the thing, I don't think he is a $2.4MM defenseman anymore. $1MM+- for 3rd pair /PK I could see.

Am I the only one who didn’t realize he was still in the league?

He seems like he’s been around too long.
