He has reportedly turned down the Islanders best offer and will test free agency. LINK

Do you guys think Ken will look into him?

Do you guys think he could be useful to our blueline?

If we acquire him, which Dman is getting moved out?

35 years old. Maybe for cheap but I rather get bigger up front. We need goals our defense was decent.

While I agree he isn't worth $6M+, I think his talent could spark our offense both @ ES and PP.

Our PP may actually be relevant.

Though I am also on board with the youth movement / sticking with what we've got.

But let us say that we do hypothetically sign him.

Streit - Ericsson
Kronwall - DeKeyser
Smith - Kindl
Quincey - Colaiacovo

Trade Kindl + (spare depth forward)/ Flip's rights/ whatever + one of numerous F prospects/ draft pick
for
top 6 F.

Should I turn off my xbox/ps3 now?

I think that either Quincey or Colaiacovo gets traded ahead of Kindl I'm pretty sure he's part of our future.

Here's hoping Kenny has the sense to avoid this 3rd pairing, PP specialist.

Haha. He hasn't been a 3rd pairing defensemen his entire career.

His first 2 seasons on the Islanders he played #1 minutes, put up 56 and 49 pts, and had the best plus/minus over that span.

If he wasn't so old it would be a no-brainer and I would be all for it.

Still think there's a decent shot that he could be a better version of Kronwall than Kronwall, and we could slide Kronner to the 2nd pairing for even strength.

Hard to gauge his last 2 years since the Islanders have just been god-awful over that span, but if you look at the 2 years prior to that the dude was impressive.

Just saw those contract demands, yikes. I'd be ok giving him something like 5 or 6 for 1 year. But how the hell do you ask for a 4 year deal as a 35 year old???

I would've liked him as a deadline add before they signed DD. At this point, just stick with what you have. Spend on a top 6 winger if you spend this summer.

If we can find a team that's willing to do something around Kindl+ for a top 6 RH shot forward I'd be all for signing Streit. Though he can no longer handle top pairing minutes giving him Kindl's minutes would almost certainly give us more production.

Say we sign Streit at 2 years x 6M, we have to overpay on the dollar side if we want him to sign for only 2 years, we then trade Kindl+(Insert prospect) for that RH forward.

On defense we go with pretty much the same thing as this year:

Kronwall-Ericsson <- Our top pairing, top shutdown pair.

Quincey-Smith <- Yep, they're back again. They play the 2nd hardest minutes

Streit-DeKeyser <-Give them the easy minutes, protects Streit & let's us ease DeKeyser into a bigger role.

Lashoff-CC

I think we have a lot of options this offseason & I think with cap coming down there will be some players on the block who normally wouldn't be there.

Let's not act like Kronwall is a safe top pairing guy. He was -5 his first year playing top pairing minutes. Streit's first year in NYI he played #1 minute overall, scored 56 points, and was a +5. and that was on the Islanders... I know Streit is 35, but I still don't think it's a lock that kronwall would be a better option on the top pair than Streit. You can flame me if you want to and I know Streit had a terrible plus/minus the last 2 seasons, but then again that team was one of the worst in the league. I'm just not a big fan of Kronwall playing top pairing minutes against other teams best units. He's the best we have right now, but he's not the best option in the world.

At this point he's much better suited to be on the top pairing then Streit is. Streit had the 4th highest ES TOI on the Isles blue line, as the season wore on he had decreasing minutes every month of the season. He started the year getting 25 minutes per game & he finished the year averaging only 20. In the playoffs he was 6th in ES TOI on the Isles, he averaged 16 ES minutes a game.

He apparently had a bum knee this year but at this point in his career it's better for him to get lesser minutes at ES & just eat up the PP time, that's his strength now. Now I wouldn't give him 3 years but 2 years is more than fine imo, even if it's at 6M instead of 5M, or 5.5M per.

Ok, that's a very fair counter. My only concern was his durability/health since he was 35 and I was unaware that his minutes were cut back and he had some knee issues. If he could stay healthy I still think he could be a decent option for 1 or 2 seasons. Especially considering the fact Markov just had a very good season and is 34 and was coming back from knee issues.

Not really. Maybe if they got rid of Quincey. But to be honest, Quincey fulfills the third pairing and pk role pretty well. Kindl and Kronwall can run our PP's next year.

I'd rather throw money at a power forward or see who gets bought out or pursue a trade for a top line winger.

I'm not sure why there is so much worry about Streit's age. If he was signed, him and Kronwall would likely be the only D over 30 starting every night. Also, he might be 35, but he's only played 7 years in the NHL (missed an 8th season because of a shoulder injury) - so he doesn't have a lot of wear and tear from the 82 game grind.

Aside from the one missed season, he seems to have had a very good injury track record, he plays in all situations, he takes the body (despite his size), and he produces points at ES and on the powerplay.

Chalk me up as interested. And for a guy who can play 20+ minutes, and consistently put up 40+ points, I don't see $6m a year being too high. I'd worry less about getting our value out of Streit than I would of any of the top forwards.

We're on the same page.

I'd rather attempt to solve the offense problem from within by giving Tatar and Nyquist more time. The defense and powerplay issues could significantly helped by another steady guy who can eat over 20 minutes and contribute offensively.

I hope I'm wrong, but I don't see Kindl or Smith being big answers from the point, which influences my opinion on signing a veteran to take those duties.

I think Smith is a guy who helps out with your transition game very well, but really I don't see him as a PP QB. Kindl I think is very good at setting up shop in the offensive zone, and moving the puck and shooting through traffic on the PP. Think we need a really high-end guy still to help out with the PP though, which could be Streit.

This is what I'm thinking as well.

And I remember all year is our board complaining in GDT's about getting shots through to the net on the PP, and how bad the PP is in general (although it got a little better towards the end).

Streit helps cure these ailments. And can maybe share knowledge about running a PP with Kronwall, DeKeyser, Smith, Kindl, Sproul, etc.

yeah I wouldn't want to give him more than a couple years because the Wings have a ridiculous amount of legit defensive prospects that need to get a shot at NHL time in the next few years between Sproul/Ouellet/Jensen/Marchenko/Backman(and that's ignoring other lesser guys like Almqvist) and having him around till he's like 40 could potentially do some long term damage but the Wings should definitely kick the tires on getting him for a couple years
