Let's use the case with Hamilton, who apparently didn't want to remain with Boston. What stops Boston from trading him away to Calgary and wait til he signs there, only to then trade him back? Of course for a higher price, but will still have this kid locked up for a long time?

So essentially you're saying why didn't the Bruins trade him to Calgary, get the Flames to sign him, and then try to trade for him once he signs a contract?

1) I don't even know if that's allowed in the CBA
2) The GM would not deceive Hamilton like that because if he did, not a single player would ever sign with the Flames
3) Hamilton would likely hold out and force the Bruins to trade him somewhere else
4) It's mighty stupid for Boston to trade assets away simply to sign their own player, especially the assets it would take to re-acquire Hamilton.

The player already didn't want to play there. Now you're giving up a huge number of assets to bring back someone who doesn't want to even play there. Seems like a good situation...

Why not just encourage the player's agent to have him sign an offer sheet with another team, and then match it?

That would seem to be more straightforward.

I don't think there's a realistic way to make that happen. There's just so much at work that no team or GM would pull off.

Besides. If you have a player who doesn't want to play for your team...why would you want him to play for your team? That's a bad situation for everybody.

What it comes down to is that most GMs want players on their team who want to play for their team.

This line of thinking completely ignores the human factor, and that is why it would be a complete failure.
