Alex Gallant looking to become the Brad Marchand of the AHL. He needs a new hockey idol. :whatever:

Not really a slewfoot, though. It's just a trip. Maybe you could even technically call it spearing. But the slewfoot call is odd and seems a bit excessive.

FWIW, the AHL rulebook is specific that slewfooting must involve a forward motion with the leg or foot. This was clearly not one.

You are right, technically not a slewfoot, but he intentionally swept his legs out from behind, so 2 min for tripping isn't enough. Maybe trip with an additional Match Penalty for deliberate intent to injure would be more appropriate. I'm guessing there was more going on earlier in the game. Wasn't like the Reign player was celebrating the empty net goal or doing anything to antagonize the Heat.

That would have been my call. Possibly the ref didn't want to invoke the additional financial/suspension penalty that usually attaches to a Match.

Of course, if he just gives the guy a minor penalty for unsportsmanlike conduct with one minute left, it has the same effect as a game misconduct, so clearly he made a conscious choice to issue the 5+game.

Just a weird situation leading to a weird call.

What's Frk doing mocking the crowd? Gallants not used to losing and probably didn't like the showboating.

I didn't see any showboating. Are you referring to when Frk puts his hand to his head? I thought he was just reaching up to adjust his helmet. Can't really hear the crowd - maybe the crowd was booing him, and he was giving the "I can't hear you" sign? Didn't look that way on the video. The announcer even says something like "I don't know what that is about, must have been brewing from earlier"

If you sweep a player's legs from behind, that's a slewfoot. Maybe he didn't make a sweeping motion, but the result was the same. You could argue the intent was the same, as the intent (clearly) was to trip the player up from behind. Five and a game is a good call. Probably worth a three-game suspension, too.

No, slew footing is the player committing the fouls uses their FOOT not their stick. He did not use his FOOT in this case therefore no slewfooting.

This kind of stupidity can lead to a line brawl or even a bench clearing brawl.

I have no problem with a 5 minute and a GM. This needs to be discouraged!
