Obviously there was a reason no one wanted to re-sign him.

Bozak is 32 and clearly should have been warning signs. It was a terrible contract one minutes after if t was signed. If it was three years X $3 M, becomes a different story. Cap hit at $2 M and then you've got value

If St Louis eats 750K to 1M of his salary over the next 2 1/2 seasons. They could get a 2nd rd pick for him.

Bozak has always been a little on the streaky side as well. I doubt it's in St.Louis' best interest to sell low on him before giving him more than 31 games, especially when you add in him having to adjust to a new system. Obviously not a 1 for 1 comparison, but we saw similar concerns with Matt Duchene during his first stretch of play with the Senators and he seems to have hit his stride just fine. New contracts and trades sometimes take awhile to work out.

I'm pretty confident Bozak will end the season around 45 points. He may even hit 50 if he moves up the lineup due to injuries.

It's a bad contract, but at least the term isn't horrible. If we go tank mode, it really won't matter in the grand scheme of things. If we try to retool, then it's more of an issue. He doesn't drive the play, but he's also not good enough to be on the top lines with good players on a good team.

We wish he'd be a PP specialist, but he does nothing on the top unit. He's just sort of a guy that's there that wins faceoffs. He's not noticeably bad in any one area, but he's also not really that good in any one area.

Knew it was a bad contract the second I read the news release. He was bad in his last season with the Leafs, and was on the 1st PP unit. Skating, puck battles, finish were all noticeably below average. His only positive impact is in the shootout. Sometimes I wonder what games pro scouts are watching.

Most every UFA veteran player will end up with a bad contract. 3 years total term is the important part, not the annual salary. The Blues didn't have ROR yet at the time, and the next best UFA center option was Stastny who they traded away last year. I think its an entirely defensible choice to overspend at that position a bit to get an UFA option.

He's been mildly disappointing, but in the context of how messed up the whole team is I'm not sure where to attribute the blame. This team never looked like a well coached team this year, and maybe Bozak could be looking better.

The real issue is that I'd prefer to re-sign Schenn, and keep ROR and Thomas to also play center. There is not going to be room for Bozak with Thomas' emergence (by next season). If the Blues don't keep Schenn and instead have Bozak, its a mistake.

After all... Would St-Louis had been better keeping re-signing Statsny instead of wheeling and dealing to get RoR and Bozak ?

I've got the feeling the TEAM was glued better with Stasny onboard.

Eh, not really. ROR is a huge upgrade over Stastny. Bozak replaced Berglund or Sobotka, take your pick. Even though it's more cap, I'd prefer the shorter team of Bozak.

How about team spirit ? When Statsny was dealt to Winnipeg, the team seemed is a kind of disarray, bad mood about it. Was Tarasenko better with Statsny ?

He was traded because we were in disarray and out of the playoffs. Tarasenko wasn't any better with Stastny. His issues are most likely due to his shoulder/wrist injury or his desire to bulk up and losing some of his quickness. Tarasenko is at his best when he's with Schwartz.

I thought Saint-Louis was very close of a Playoffs spot and the wheels fell off after that trade.

We were sinking fast and facing the prospect of missing the playoffs, losing Stastny for nothing and not having a 1st round pick (traded for Schenn). They couldn't risk the worst case scenario, so traded Stastny. Yes, it did seem to hurt team morale (Schenn in particular I remember being disappointed after the Stastny trade). But I assume they considered the interest on both side in an extension, and one or both sides decided to move on.

You are right that Stastny was a glue guy, and I think some Blues fans underestimate the loss of defensive forwards like Stastny, Sobotka, Berglund, Brodziak and Upshall. They didn't score a ton, but definitely held things down defensively.

I'm curious how he is doing and how Blues fans feel about him. He was a trooper in TO I hope he continues to be a good player.
Blues fan here.

I hardly ever notice him at all. Every once in a while John Kelly or Darren Pang say something about him and I think 'oh yeah, that guy...'
