Injury Report: Steve Downie, upper body, questionable for Mar. 28; Tye McGinn recalled from AHL

Downie will be re-evaluated tomorrow (Sunday). Nothing more was issued post-game today.

Tye McGinn was called up from the Phantoms to the Flyers on Sunday as Steve Downie’s temporary replacement.

Downie appeared to concuss himself during an odd play right at the start of Saturday’s 4-1 Flyers’ win over St. Louis.

Skating slowly up the side boards, Downie turned around to look behind him and ran smack into the Blues’ Patrik Berglund. The way Downie hit the ice and remained, suggested a concussion and/or whiplash injury. He had to be helped off the ice and did not play again.

The club lists him as day to day.

Downie already has had one prolonged concussion since joining the Flyers in late October in a bad trade that sent the Flyers’ top penalty-killing forward at the time, Max Talbot, to the Colorado Avalanche.

And please come back healthy elsewhere... I never cared much for Downie. He used to be very good along the boards and was a good passer, etc. Now he's just small, slow and doesn't produce. And he loses his cool and takes terrible penalties. His play this season should earn him time on the bench not the 2nd/3rd line.

Also, Flyers need to make a call up. If Rosehill gets playing time, there goes any semblance of a 4th line

He just hasn't been looking too good for a while now... He should definitely be benched for a while even if he is deemed healthy enough to play. His ice time is waste away by poor plays and dumb penalty's.

This is bad if it's his head. The Flyers clearly don't want to resign him, but I feel they need to think of the player's health beyond the game of hockey at this point.

As the organization that has dealt with Lindros to Primeau to Gagne, they should be at the forefront of not risking a player's long term health by putting someone with concussion issues back on the ice too soon, but time after time they make the same mistake over and over again.

Downie has a history of head injuries and concussions and looked shaken up for some time now. He just doesn't look right.

He should be shut down for a while and not considered day-2-day all over again!

Let him rest for a couple of weeks, he needs it after all those concussions he had this year. The worst thing to do is to rush the guy out on the ice way to early, think about his health.
If he gets another concussion early after this maybe it will ruin his career, and maybe also will give him major problems even after his career is over.
It's way more important that Steve will recover properly to avoid health problems in the future, than to have him playing as soon as possible.

I'd prefer that we give Tye McGinn a honest chance to play for the rest of the season.

Weird as it is there is a trend. We started playing better when he came over from the Avs. Now we lost twice without him. There is talk of him coming back Friday

Crazy if true. I'm no doctor, but with the amount of head hits he's taken just this season it'd seem wise to have him sit out a bit longer. Though, if the doctors clear him I guess that's all that matters.

I want Downie in the lineup over McGinn, so I'm not using this as an excuse to keep him out, but he should really chill with hockey for a bit.
