Provide proof that this is what happens.

You didn't notice? There are Athletics writers here on hfboards...Kevin Kurz for example.
Also...how do you think they have my email if I never signed up for anything? You think fat LeBrun dreamed about it in one of his sweaty nights and then decided to fill it with their trash? You answer that yourself...

Buying data may not help their credibility but but it's not illegal. What makes it illegal is the intrusive way they flood inboxes and that you, as a victim, can do nothing about it. They're bound to get in legal trouble sooner or later.

They would get in trouble for it in Europe where consumer data protections are strong, but not in the US of A where noone gives a %¤#& about privacy. They are not the only company by far that is using spam marketing tactics.

Well, I'm in Switzerland and it's my inbox they're flooding. If I had some time and money to spare I'd sure surely take a run at them. Not even viagra pills ads are this intrusive. Never have I experienced anything like it.

hmm. so you're mad you can't read the athletic content but at the same time insist they offer nothing a free site doesn't provide. if that's the case, I don't see why you are so upset you can't read their articles

Just basing this off what people who subscribe say. For example, the stuff about Suter was already well known years ago. And the Weiss saga continues... so what is the real breaking news verdict to solve the mystery when payers know nothing more of substance than the non-payers?

So I'm not seeing anything that justify's paying. In the mean time, I bet they are getting more paying subscribers from sports forums like this one from FREE advertising/plugs... yet "nothing in life is free" you said.

I couldn't agree with this more. Why should their writers be allowed to create a free hfboards account just to post their articles here?
Also, did you ever see them actually pay for ads? All they do is buy data to flood people's mailboxes...don't think that costs them much. Otherwise what they do is to trick people into a subsciptions with perma sales and those permanently retweeted fake reviews that don't cost them a penny. If we have to pay for everything...why don't they?

I don't know about their financials...whether they're desperate or just greedy. What I know is that what they do is illegal and I hope somebody takes action. Won't be me anytime soon since I'm just a poor student but seriously...enough is enough. They lost their credibility long ago. At this point, I wouldn't even read their stuff for free. Comply with the law and get a trustworthy marketing strategy or get lost.

They're not the only company who charges readers for hockey content...but they're the only one with such illegal and dubious marketing methods. Did you ever see any other beat writers retweet fake reviews on twitter? I never did...it all started with those modern age bandids of The Athletics...

Ok so I disagree with @Dotter on the value/worth of subscribing to the Athletic, but I can understand his reasons and can have a discussion with him.

This though. This is just delusional.

Why though? How can you be okay with their dubious marketing?

Guess I have been lucky to have escaped them so far. I am in Norway and have to click on the cookies policy for every new website I visit. Seems a lot less spam in general since I moved here last fall.

I'd probably think about it if it wasn't for their ongoing whining/begging on twitter and them spamming email accounts like mine. I get it if they're desperate but I think a minimum of decency wouldn't be asking for too much. And even if not I'd at least expect them to comply with the law. Since they don't, they'll never get a single penny from me. Friggin pirates. I agree they should be banned from hfboards.
So you're saying you work for free? Yeah, that's what I thought.

Where did I say that?
You seem to think that the Athletic reporters should work for free and you shouldn't have to pay for it. Try going into a store and taking products or services without paying for them.

Where did I say that? Why are you quoting me without reading my comments first?

The exact opposite is the case here. The Athletic thinks that it's okay to invest nothing in marketing and flood hfboards, twitter and people's mailboxes instead. As if that's not enough, some of their writers apparently even copy&paste content from hfboards without giving credit. Their methods are illegal and hfboards should either ban or charge them. I don't mind paying for content but parasites won't ever get a penny from me.

Posting on twitter or message boards or doing email marketing is not illegal. It's called 21st century marketing. If you don't want email, its as easy as checking the spam tab. Not sure why you find this so difficult.

It's illegal to flood people's mailboxes in an intrusive way where you get multiple emails per day and where those emails get past all spam filters and where the unsubscribe option doesn't exist/work. If you copy content without giving credit is called a plagiat and illegal.

You think it's okay to pay for The Athletics content but at the same time you think they should get everything for free even if they bend/break the law? Well, okay then...I think it's about time for hfboards to take action against those parasites. Gotta give to get.

How would you know they plagiarize if you dont read their content? Also they do pay for marketing. For example when i see there ads on twitter it says promoted underneath which is how you know twitter was paid to show that ad.

Ok. I've never seen that. Must be new. Used to be only those retweeted fake reviews.

I do know because I read it here on hfboards...with some actual proof. Go ask the Sharks board.

Some more free promo on twitter plus proof that they systematically don't let people unsubscribe from their spam. It's not just me. It's just how they work.

Seems like the guy told you exactly what to do to make it stop. Why you still whining? Why wouldn’t they do free promo on Twitter? If you don’t like it don’t follow the guy.

This isn't me. I just posted it here to show you that the Athletic bastards deliberately don't let people unsubscribe. It's not just me. It's impossible to unsubscribe...it's the dubious (and illegal) marketing strategy of those bastards to fill people's mailboxes.

I don't follow any of those assclowns. But Dana retweeted it...

Did you try emailing where Mirtle suggested?

Are you trying to say Dana is paid to promote the athletic?

How stupid do you think I am? Internet rule 101...never answer dubious emails. That's exactly what those bastards want. That way they know that the email account is still active and used. I stopped trying to unsubscribe a while back, too. Doesn't work anyway because they never wanted it to work. If they find out that their spam actually reaches anyone they'd probably send me 4 or 5 mails per day instead of 2. If those bastards ever hear from me it's gonna be via a lawyer...
Regarding Dana...read Mirtle's post and you know why she retweeted...

this has went off course with a bunch of off topic stuff. So, this thread is closed and don't spread it elsewhere that I'm going to have to moderate for being off topic. Thanks.
