With him being injured for the year did he just become a more valuable trade asset? Let me explain. You can IR Stepan for the year and acquire a cool 6m in cap space by giving up say a 3rd and or players Sens want in the trade. That kind of cash allows you to trade for a Hall.
Any teams you think might bite?

Pretty sure that's not how that works. You acquire Stepan and put him on LTIR, but the 6M in space he generates is used on himself. If your team is at 80M and have 1.5M in space, then Stepan would let you spend to 87.5M, but he would put you up to 86M. If LTIR contracts were a magic cap maker then teams wouldn't be paying other teams to take them.

Forget the Clarkson trade ever happened. Toronto was in a unique situation because another LTIR contract was on the books and Marner was holding out (the cap hit is calculated differently when that occurs). We may not see that scenario play out again for a while. There is no benefit in acquiring an LTIR contract in isolation otherwise. It does not create cap space for a team already at the ceiling.

I think what he is saying when you trade for Stepan he doesn't count against the cap, however whoever you send back to Ottowa would come off your cap. For example the Tampa trades Tyler Johnson for Stepan. Tampa Bay would be absolved of Johnson's remaining cap hit (5 Million pro rated or whatever) then Tampa acquires Stepan and his hit goes to LTIR freeing up the space for Tampa.
