Two questions, what are examples of the longest time periods between when a player joined a franchise and winning a cup? And on the flip side, what are examples of players who stayed with a franchise after winning a cup?

In the first category, Steve Yzerman joined Detroit in 1983, but had to wait 14 years before winning his first cup in 1997.

In the second category, Stan Mikita won his only cup with Chicago in 1961, but stayed on for another 19 years before retiring in 1980.

What are some other examples?

Johnny Bucyk's first game in Boston was October 1955, and he won his first Stanley Cup in May 1970 (close to 15 years).

Alex Delvecchio won his third Stanley Cup in Detroit in April 1955. His last game there was in November 1973 (a span of more than 18 years).

Steven Stamkos - played his first game with Tampa in October 2008; won his first cup in September 2020 - almost 12 full years. With Hedman it would be 11 years.

Yzerman, Ovechkin, Stamkos, Modano all players who waited at least 10 years with a franchise before winning a cup.

Remove the “with the franchise” condition, and add Selanne and Hull as players who waited at least 10 years to win a cup.

At least for forwards, with notable exceptions, most of the all time greats historically won within their first 10 years.

Eric Staal stayed 10 years a Canes after the cup, Marchand 11 years and could be a Bruins for life after that
