Jean Beliveau won the first Conn Smythe in 1965. The players listed before were retroactively selected by the Society for International Hockey Research - you can decide how credible those selections are.

Of the 99 players who have led the SCF in scoring (or tied for the lead), only 23 of them won the Conn Smythe (official or retro).

Howe, Esposito, Gretzky and Sakic are the only players to lead the SCF series in scoring, along with the playoffs overall, more than once.

Nearly half of the players listed here (19 of 41) won the Conn Smythe (official or retro).

This thread has been updated for 2019. Ryan O'Reilly led the Stanley Cup finals in scoring, led the playoffs in scoring overall (tied), and won the Conn Smythe.

So only three players have ever scored more goals in the Stanley Cup Finals than Ryan O'Reilly, and no one since Gretzky in 1985.

One interesting stat that came up with O'Reilly's Conn Smythe is that he is the first player since Gretzky in 1985 to score a goal in four straight Finals' games. (Incidentally, Gretzky also scored in games 1 and 2 of the 1987 Final, so should that count as six straight games?)

Yvan Cournoyer quite underrated on this board. Problem with him is his prime was from 1968 to 1974, especially the 1971 and 1973 Stanley Cups (plus the 1972 Summit Series), which are outshone by the Orr and Esposito show and squeezed between two Montreal dynasties (in which he played but not at his best). Also squeezed between Béliveau and Lafleur as a french-canadian superstar, so he gets lost in the shuffle.

His performance in the 1973 Finals was clutch and he was a consistent money player throughout this window.

His numbers are also lowered by playing for Montreal who used a four lines rotation.

Yeah, I like Cournoyer.

He was a great goal scorer, good hockey sense, great speed obviously, clutch player. His game was pretty adaptable.

You missed Hossa in 2008. He was on the losing team (Penguins).
