Am I the only person that thinks that the FPHL and the SPHL are going to combine in the next 5 years or are there others who think that's going to happen?
Combine? No, no chance.

Might the SPHL absorb some of the better run FPHL teams in the near future and let the rest of the league die off? I think there's a reasonable chance that might happen.

Zero chance. Two entirely different business models, two entirely different operating methods. One league has profitable teams if they average more than 1,000 fans per game, the other needs 3,000 per game minimum.

The 652 fans the Mentor Ice Shark Breakers Plugs drew will be sad about having the money they'd have spent on tickets in their bank accounts.
Well, presuming that "monies will be returned within the next six weeks" really happens, you have a valid point. Though Christmas will be coming late for those sad folks.

FPHL teams plan to have their first games on December 4. Unknown number of teams in the league.
Or December 18th, or January 15th, whatever. :nopity:
FPHL Announces New Tentative Start Date; Board of Governors Overseeing Situation
November 19, 2020

Syracuse, NY – The Federal Prospects Hockey League and its Board of Governors have come to an agreement on how best to proceed regarding starting the 2020-21 season.

To keep a more realistic start date in mind, the league is now pushing back the start date of the season to no earlier than January 15, 2021. This date still carries the tentative tag with it and can be pushed back farther as situations change in the States where the FPHL operates.

The league anticipates its member teams being able to play 40+ games with this tentative start date in mind. ...

The latest Board of Governors meeting this week concluded that a December 18th start date was untenable for the league and its members and have moved the start date back in response to that development. The next meeting is set for the week of November 30th, with the goal in mind of ratifying a schedule during it for the January 15th start date. ...

FPHL Announces New Start Date For 2021 Season

December 30, 2020

Syracuse, NY - The Federal Prospects Hockey League is announcing a change in its start date for the 2021 regular season.

The FPHL and its member clubs are now looking forward to a February 3rd start to the regular season. This will be preceded by "The Empire Showcase" in late January. The Empire Showcase will be a series of pre-season games between the two New York teams (Watertown Wolves and Elmira Enforcers) to prepare for the new season.

A new schedule is being prepared with this start date and potential state and county regulations from each team's home in mind. The league is estimating a slate of games totaling in the low 40s per team in the regular season. Due to restrictions & guidelines within the State of Connecticut, the Danbury Hat Tricks will start the season on a pause with a hope to return at an approved to be determined later date.

Currently, there is no way to predict an allotted fan attendance league-wide due to the difference in current restrictions of the pandemic. Thus, the FPHL will not be setting any league restrictions on fan attendance and rather will delegate this responsibility to its member teams. Each arena’s policies will vary due to state and county regulations and the FPHL will abide by the permissions given to them from relevant authorities.

The FPHL will release a 2021 playing schedule in the near future. We're excited for the return of hockey in each of our cities across the United States.

With the FPHL member team count down to seven, and with Danbury delaying their season start, that leaves just two teams in the League's Eastern Division. "The Empire Showcase" may just turn into a season-long home-and-home mega-series. :dunno:

I don't even know why they'd bother starting the season without Danbury because the entire league has essentially been built around the city since it's inception. It's also sad because the Hat Tricks and their owners were making real progress in rebuilding the market after the past fiascoes (and yes, I realize the irony that the frontman for the organization is the guy who was in large part responsible for poisoning the market, but Alan pulling out pretty much doomed the team. Herm doesn't have to worry about that as the DIA owns the team so he can just be a personality which is his strength).
